Bruce Hammack
Bruce Hammack, a native Texan, started his professional writing career back in the 10th grade when the local Rotary Club sponsored this writing contest for students in civics class. To the amazement of teachers and students alike, he won the $25 savings bond that was the prize.
After he retired from a criminal justice career, he picked up the proverbial pen once more. Now he draws on his own extensive background with law enforcement (and criminals) in order to write clean and contemporary detective and crime mysteries.
Bruce, as an avid Sherlock Holmes and Hercule Poirot fan, firmly believes that the world cannot have enough whodunits in it.
When Bruce is not busy writing, he enjoys classic whodunits, watching film noir movies, travel, and a quiver full of kids and grandkids.
“Exercise is Murder” is the first novel in the “Smiley and McBlythe Mystery” series and was released in 2019. Was it accidental drowning? Or murder? It is up to the blind detective to figure it out.
Discovered at the bottom of his exercise pool, the police believe that the death of Steve Smiley’s buddy was just an accident. But Smiley’s not buying it.
There are a bunch of things that a blind man is able to do, however solving a murder alone is just not one of them. For that, he needs a partner, one that knows their way around the crime scene. That’s where Heather McBlythe comes in. She can help him out in solving this crime, however can she possibly keep him out of danger? Steve does not have any choice. Without her help, somebody is going to get away with murder.
Armed with years of experience as a homicide detective, and his new partner, he sets out to catch a murderer. He knows that he is on the right trail as a bullet whizzes past his ear. Is he going to resurrect his life as master crime solver, or is his sleuthing going to get both of them killed?
“Jingle Bells, Rifle Shells” is the second novel in the “Smiley and McBlythe Mystery” series and was released in 2019. Steve Smiley and his partner hear this rifle shot. Which makes the hordes of Christmas shoppers scatter. One famous big game hunter drops to the sidewalk. They grab the gorgeous teen that was arguing with a man and flee to safety. Bella, the victim’s adopted daughter and a celebrity in her own right, doesn’t show any emotion about the murder. Find her birth parents is her one passionate request.
McBlythe and Smiley’s search intertwines with the murder investigation of Bella’s adopted dad over and over again, and they uncover a shocking secret. Like it or not, they have to first identify this killer in order to learn the full truth behind Bella’s adoption.
There’s a host of suspects lining up like Santa’s reindeer. Can these determined investigators tie a ribbon on this case? Is Bella going to have the best Christmas ever, or is heartache and death going to be the only presents being placed under the tree?
No sex scenes, no foul language, or graphic violence, only a great mystery that is waiting to be solved.
“Long Road to Justice” is the first novel in the “Star of Justice” series and was released in 2020. He has lived a lie for 16 years now. With his mom murdered and his dad convicted, Texas State Trooper David Harper reinvented himself. But now the truth is rising up to the surface.
The conviction gets overturned and David must come clean with everybody, particularly his wife of five months, CJ. It is time for the truth. And time to deal with this gnawing need for revenge, since his mom deserves justice.
CJ and David stir the pot. There’s a den of snakes that comes out striking and another murder has been committed. His dad is the next one on the list. David races against the clock in order to catch this murderer intent on silencing the sole family that he has left.
“Murder on the Brazos” is the first novel in the “Fen Maguire Mystery” series and was released in 2023. He has no authority and no badge, in a county that is full of drugs, corruption, and murder.
Newman County, Texas was safe and clean when Fen Maguire left the sheriff’s office nine months back. However the dead drug dealer that is found floating down the river suggests things might be changing, and not for the better.
Fire engulfs the dead guy’s home, and all of the evidence is pointing to the current sheriff’s dad. Fen knows that there is much more to this case than just a drug deal gone bad.
Once Fen finds this coded notebook and stash of drugs, he launches an investigation of his own into this murder. Can he possibly uncover the layers of corruption in his beloved county? Or is this going to be an instance where justice does not prevail?
“Murder on the Angelina” is the second novel in the “Fen Maguire Mystery” series and was released in 2023. There is more to this game than just dodging paintballs, with a killer on the loose.
Fen Maguire (a newly licensed private investigator) gets his latest case: to investigate an extortion ring that is putting the squeeze on loggers in the piney woods of East Texas. Fen, while working undercover at a local university, traces the clues to this neighboring county’s championship paintball team. And in order to prove it, he has to first gain the trust of this tight lipped community.
Before he’s able to make his case and expose these extortionists, the paintball team’s leader is discovered dead in the middle of a match. With the stakes even higher now, Fen’s forced to break cover and begin digging deep. It is a toss up just who hated this team more: the team’s competitors or the loggers.
If he is unable to break through this wall of resistance, his career is going to end before it has really begun, and this killer is going to get away with murder.
