Chantal James
Chantal James makes her home in Washington, DC, and she has published work across several different forms of writing. Those forms include poetry, fiction, essays, and book reviews. Her pieces have shown up in places like Catapult, Harvard’s Transition Magazine, Paste Magazine, Obsidian, The Bitter Southerner, and Callaloo. She works as a poet, a fiction writer, a reviewer of books, and more.
One of the clearer strengths in her writing is how she puts together her characters. These people in her stories feel like someone a reader might actually know. Their hopes and their problems come across in a simple and believable way. That quality makes her stories enjoyable to read without needing anything flashy or overdone.
James also has a natural gift for pulling a reader into the action of a story. The narrative moves forward in a way that feels steady and interesting. She blends everyday life with small, strange turns that belong to American magical realism and literary fantasy. The result is a friendly and straightforward kind of storytelling that does not waste time.
Her characters often face situations that are unusual but still recognizable. A reader in one country might not know the exact streets of Washington, DC, where James lives. But that same reader can still understand a character who wants something, fails a little, and tries again. That mix of the strange and the familiar is what makes her literary fantasy and magical realism so widely appealing.
She also keeps her stories entertaining by making sure the plot never drags. Things happen. People change their minds. Small surprises show up at the right moments. And because she writes in a way that feels true to herself, none of it comes across as fake or forced. The fun for the reader comes from trusting a writer who knows what she likes and shares it plainly.
Looking ahead, Chantal James shows no sign of slowing down. She continues to live and write in Washington, DC, with the same steady energy she has always shown. More stories, essays, and book reviews will likely appear in the years ahead. Readers can expect her to keep making work that is true to herself and just as entertaining as before.
Early and Personal Life
Chantal James grew up with a natural pull toward books and language. Like many young readers, she likely spent hours getting lost in stories that felt strange and real at the same time. That early love for reading slowly turned into a love for putting words on the page herself.
She found her inspiration by staying curious about the world around her. A major moment in her growth as a writer came with a Fulbright fellowship for creative writing in Morocco. That kind of experience helped her see new places and bring those feelings back into her work.
Over the years, she has kept building on those early interests. In 2019, she became a finalist for the Alex Albright Creative Nonfiction prize, received from the North Carolina Literary Review. That honor shows how she has continued to grow, staying true to her own voice while reaching new readers.
Writing Career
Chantal James began her writing career in a notable way with her debut novel None but the Righteous, released by Counterpoint Press. That book earned a nomination for the John Leonard Prize for Best First Book from the National Book Critics Circle. Kirkus Reviews also picked it as one of their annual ten most anticipated fiction novels.
Her debut was further selected for the American Book Sellers Association’s Indie Next List and for the inaugural Lit 16 reading series by writers Deesha Philyaw, Kiese Laymon, and Robert Jones, Jr. For more than ten years, she has also been a regular contributor to On the Ground, a radio show on 89.3FM that airs voices of resistance from Washington, DC, both locally and internationally through the Pacifica Network. She continues to write, so more work from her is still on the way.
Fes is a Mirror
Chantal James is the author of the literary novella Fes is a Mirror. Aquarius Press LLC published this work on October 27, 2025.
James wrote the book after receiving a Fulbright fellowship to live in Morocco. She learned a local Arabic dialect to interview eyewitnesses of political events there. The story follows Sheep, a nonspeaking woman raised in the wild and later taken to the city of Fes by a man named Aziz. After Aziz is jailed, a student named Rachid connects Sheep to his Brooklyn cousin Aisha, who teaches her to spin hip hop records. Sheep’s DJ skills offer comfort during the 1990 bread riots in Fes, while Aziz, Rachid, and Aisha each project their own needs onto her. The book asks if Sheep can determine her own future or be reclaimed by the wilderness.
General readers will find that this book offers a fresh and unusual story. The characters feel different from one another in memorable ways. The mix of music and political unrest keeps the pages turning. It is a good choice for someone wanting something original.
None But the Righteous
Chantal James wrote the historical novel None But the Righteous. Counterpoint Press published this book on January 11, 2022.
The story follows a nineteen year old named Ham after a storm destroys his New Orleans home. He travels by Greyhound between a friend’s place in Atlanta and a young woman’s home in rural Alabama who is now the mother of his child. A saint’s relic given to him by his foster mother influences Ham as he faces becoming a parent. He later makes a difficult trip back to learn if his foster mother lived, while a spirit that both guides and takes over his body pushes him toward a new kind of freedom.
Many will find this book moving and hard to put down. The main character feels real in his confusion and his worries. The spirit that guides and takes over him adds a strange and interesting layer. It is a good pick for someone who likes literary fantasy with heart.
