Chetan Bhagat is a renowned author, screenwriter, motivational speaker, columnist, and television personality from India. He is famous for writing Indian-English novels in the realistic fiction, erotica, nonfiction, and romance genres. Chetan has written eight novels so far that mainly feature the young urban middle-class of India. His notable works include Five Point Someone, Half Girlfriend, One Night at the Call Center, 2 States, etc. All of Chetan’s novels are widely popular and many of them have been adopted into Bollywood movies. As a columnist, he writes columns on a regular basis about career development, current affairs, and youth in leading daily newspapers likes Dainik Bhaskar and The Times of India. The novels written by Chetan have sold more than 7 million copies all over the world. In 2008, The NY Times labeled him as the biggest selling novelist of the English language in the history of India. The screenwriting work of author Chetan includes working for movies like 2 States, Kai Po Che!, Half Girlfriend, and Kick, the former three being adapted based on his own novels. His work in Kai Po Che! has won him the Best Screenplay Award at the 2014 Filmfare Awards.

All of Chetan’s books have been published under the banner of Rupa Publications, an Indian-based publishing company. Recently, he has signed a contract with Amazon Publishing and has published his latest book, The Girl In Room 105, with the new publication. Author Chetan was born in New Delhi, India on April 22, 1974. His mother worked for the government in the agriculture department, while his dad was an officer in the Indian Army. Chetan has a younger brother named Ketan, who is also an author. Chetan completed his schooling from the Dhaula Kuan Army Public School in Delhi. Following this, he pursued his mechanical engineering degree from IIT Delhi and obtained it in 1995. Then, he enrolled in an MBA program at IIM Ahmedabad and earned it in 1997. Immediately after passing out from MBA, Chetan started working for an investment banking company called Golden Sachs. He was employed in the company’s Hong Kong office, where he worked for around ten years. In an interview, Chetan had said that he was selected for the post of an investment banker in Golden Sachs after going through 27 rounds of internal interviews. It was during his stay in Hong Kong that Chetan got the idea to write his first book, Five Point Someone. Later, he shifted to Mumbai to write full time and to work at the Deutsche Bank at the same time.

After finding success in his first attempt at writing and publishing a novel, Chetan wrote a few more novels in the following years and became a popular personality in the country. All his books have been bestsellers and have been the inspiration for several Bollywood films. The Time magazine has included Chetan in the list of World’s top 100 Most Influential People. In addition to writing novels, Chetan likes to give his opinions on various issues in the country. He gave up investment banking in 2009 and now focuses completely on his writing career. Along with the grand successes, Chetan has also faced some controversies in his career. He was accused of plagiarizing his book, One Indian Girl, from one of Anvita Bajpai’s short stories. Anvita filed a complaint against Chetan in the court and the case is still pending before the Civil Court in Bangalore. Likewise, Chetan also faced the accusation of plagiarizing the story of his famous book, Half Girlfriend. Over the years of his literary career, Chetan has enjoyed being a successful writer. He is happy to know that readers in the country and abroad like his work and appreciate his efforts in developing the stories. A very popular book written author Chetan Bhagat is entitled ‘One Night at the Call Center’. The book was first published in 2005 and then again by Ballantine Books in 2007. Chetan has done the setting of this book in Gurgain, Haryana, India; and has described the main characters in the form of 6 friends working at a call center. The friends include Esha, Shyam, Radhika, Vroom, Priyanka, and Military Uncle. At the story’s beginning, the six friends are shown as working night shifts in the call center and providing technical solutions for a major appliance corporation based in the United States. All of them are skilled in accent management and patience, and are too good in providing help to the American consumers. Outside their call center life, each one of them seems to be going through a rough patch in their lives.

Shyam loses his self-confidence after facing rejection from his colleague. He cannot take it that he has to see the girl who dumped him sitting beside him everyday. The girl, Priyanka, doesn’t have any option as her parents have arranged his marriage to a Seattle-based Indian. Esha dreams about becoming a model, but she does not seem to have the guts to break the news to her parents and take the first step towards achieving her dream. Vroom wishes to do something big in life, but feels he is stuck with the call center job. He absolutely hates to talk to idiotic customers every night. Priyanka’s life turns upside down when she learns that her husband is having an affair with his personal secretary. Likewise, Military Uncle too faces some problems in his life. On the occasion of Thanksgiving, the friends receive too many calls and become fed up. One of the calls from a special caller. It gives the friends goosebumps when they learn that God is talking to them on the other side of the line. Their life doesn’t remain the same after that.

Another exciting book by Chetan is called ‘Half Girlfriend’. It was published by Rupa Publications in 2014. This novel contains the central characters as Riya Somani and Madhav Jha. The story’s setting takes place in New Delhi, Patna, and New York. At the book’s start, Madhav Jha is introduced as a poor boy, hailing from the rural region of Bihar. Riya Somani is shown as a modern girl from a posh area in Delhi. Madhav doesn’t know to speak good English, but Riya is very good at it. Their story begins when they take admission in the same college. Madhav falls in love with Riya when he sees her for the first time. They get acquainted with each other and become good friends. When Madhav tells Riya what his heart desires, she turns down his proposal by saying that she just wants to be friends with him. But, Madhav does not back out. He insists that she try to understand his feelings for her. But, Riya doesn’t give in. Seeing how desperate Madhav is about having a relationship with her, Riya suggests a compromise solution. She tells him that she can become Madhav’s half girlfriend. Their lives take different turns from then on.
