The time is the early nineties and the place is Crossmore, a village in Ireland. Lucy is the main character and even though she lives there she somehow feels out of place there. She has a lot of good friendships but despite this she has felt this way for all her life.
She has thought about it and taking the regular path of marriage and having children is not that appealing to her. This is despite the fact that she has the doting Martin in her life, her handsome friend. They have been close since they were children.
Lucy starts to think about things and make sense of herself in the middle of a long summer, when a spark set off with her friend from school Susannah leads to a passion that becomes all consuming and quickly turns to infatuation.
Things move quickly to a real love that could end up be devastating. Lucy is worried about what her small community will think and knows that the conservative group of people could truly reject her. Now she has started living a double life, only being who she truly is with Susannah in moments that they steal to themselves.
With school concluding soon and the chance to leave Crossmore behind coming up in front of her, Lucy has to choose between two very real futures. Only one of them is going to be able to make her happy in the way that she wants, but does she have the strength to choose it?
Check out Sunburn and witness this tale of true first love for yourself and see whether fear and tradition win out or if Lucy can embrace who she truly is and try to live an authentic life despite her reservations.
Heap Earth Upon It is the second novel to come out from Chloe Michelle Howarth. This is a sapphic obsession story with a feeling of being set in the mid-twentieth century with Gothic undertones that you might really enjoy!
Tom, Jack, Anna, and Peggy are the orphaned O’Leary siblings. It is January of 1965 when they make their way to the village of Ballycrea and they would love nothing more than to be able to start again. However, they are offering up few details about their past and the reason why they moved so suddenly.
Most of the locals treat them suspiciously, but the quartet are very happy when they are given the chance to be given support and companionship by Bill and Betty Nevan. They’re a farming couple with considerable wealth who live close by.
However, for just one of the O’Learys, this friendship ends up creating an attachment that makes this dynamic dangerous for all of them. This is the story of identities and relationships getting entangled and leaving the reader wondering who they ought to trust right up until the end.
