She was part of the quiet suburban life when a historian’s letter in 1994 broke up everything and sent her on a quest that lasted thirty years to try and find out the truth behind a terrible family secret that was kept hidden for nearly half of a century. The result would be her book, Family of Spies.
Family of Spies: A World War II Story of Nazi Espionage, Betrayal, and the Secret History Behind Pearl Harbor is a 2025 book by Christine Kuehn. It is a New York Times bestseller and has been a bestseller at the top of the charts of USA Today. It has also been an indie bestseller.
The New York Times Book Review had great things to say about this book, calling it an ‘amazing and gripping tale’ that happened to be full of ‘suspenseful twists and cinematic details’. This is a story that has never been told before that revolves around the involvement of one family as Nazi and Japanese spies during World War II, as well as the very important role that they played when it came to the bombing of Pearl Harbor.
It all started with a letter that came along from a screenwriter that was asking about a story involving Christine Kuehn’s family, inquiring about her family and their involvement in the second World War as Nazi spies.
At first, Christine was shocked and very confused. She asked her father Eberhard who was seventy year sold what it was about and when she asked him, he at first stalled before deflecting and then demurring and then ultimately weeping. In the end, he understood that this day was going to come one day.
The Kuehns were a prominent family in Berlin and they witnessed the rise of the Nazis and saw it as being a way for them to make it out of the hard times that had come upon them. The daughter of the family was Ruth, Eberhard’s sister. It appeared that she had met Nazi leader Joseph Goebbels while the two of them were at a party.
The two of them got along very well and they ended up having an affair. But despite all of this, Ruth was harboring a secret that she was half-Jewish. The worst part of all of this was that Goebbels ended up finding this out. Instead of having the woman killed, he sent the entire family to go to Hawaii to work as spies.
It was there that she and her parents set up a spy operation that ran from their home. It was a few miles down the road from Pearl Harbor and Eberhard was shielded from the truth. The pair ended up passing on their secrets to the Japanese, which ended up resulting in the Pearl Harbor attack.
Once Eberhard’s father was arrested, he was tried for the involvement that he had in planning the assault. Eberhard then found out the truth about his family, leading to him facing a decision that would end up altering the path of the family forever.
Moving back and forth, Christine has found out the secret of her families as well as the untold past of spies in Hawaii, Japan, and Germany. This is a great recounting of history that readers will be fascinated by, as the author’s personal details included in this story make it one that you can’t miss. Read this book to find out what happens!
