Christopher Edge is a bestselling children’s and young adult fiction novelist who has more than a dozen works of fiction to his name. Over the years, his novels have become so popular that they have been translated into more than twenty languages. As a child, he spent his childhood in Manchester where he was often found in the local library dreaming up all manner of stories. As an adult, the library remains one of his favorite places even though he now makes his home in Gloucestershire. His novels have been nominated for the CILIP Carnegie Medal, even as he has won the Brilliant Book Award and the STEAM Children’s Book Prize. He usually gets the inspiration for his fiction from multiple alternate realities, the Big Bang theory, and quantum physics. In addition to his fiction novels, he has also written inspirational guides for creative writing in How To Be A Young #Writer and How to Write Your Best Story Ever! Before he became a bestselling novelist he worked as an editor, English teacher and publisher. He works as an education consultant and freelance publisher when he is not writing.
In 2011, he published his first novel I-Ssassins even though this was not his first rodeo. He was just four years old when he penned his first book and has always loved books. It was for this reason that he decided to study English as an undergraduate, worked as a teacher of English after graduating, and then went on to work in publishing. His debut was a supernatural conspiracy thriller and it gave him the confidence that he could make a living as a novelist. Subsequent works such as Twelve Minutes to Midnight and Army of the Dead did well enough that they won prizes and became commercial successes. However, Christopher Edge came into his own in 2016 when he published The Many Worlds of Albie Bright. It was this novel that propelled him into the limelight and made him one of the new names to watch in children’s and young adult fiction. His children’s fiction novels usually deal with topics such as grief and identity as he feels it is an honor to help young people cope with what the world throws at them and look at the world from a different lens.
As for the inspiration for his novels, Christopher Edge has all manner of sources. He has found inspiration from David Bowie’s songs to quantum physics. For instance, The Jamie Drake Equation was inspired by the moment he saw how excited his children were after learning about the International Space Station from school. Watching the ISS fly past that night, he began wondering how a kid would feel to have their father flying in the spacecraft. Once he gets the spark for a story, he usually goes on to develop the opening scene and the climax. He then fills out the rest coming up with the middle scenes, including the twists and turns that connect the beginning and the end.
Christopher Edge’s Twelve Minutes to Midnight is a work set in London during the Victorian era. It is here that Penelope Tredwell, a thirteen-year-old, has been secretly authoring The Penny Dreadful, a magazine that has gained massive popularity under the pen name Montgomery Flinch. One day, she is surprised to receive a letter detailing a strange happening: every day at twelve past midnight, the inmates of Bedlam wake up and as if on cue start to write some very bizarre messages. It is a strange letter and Penelope is determined to get to the bottom of the allegations. Hiring someone to pretend to be Montgomery Flinch, they start investigating and soon unearth a dark plot. At the center of the plot is the Spider Lady of South Kensington, a reclusive figure with ambitions of one day controlling the world. It is a dangerous quest and it is not long before they have to put their intellect and courage to bear if they are not to lose their very own lives. Combining supernatural elements and historical fiction, it is a fascinating work that keeps readers engaged from the first page to the last.
In Shadows of the Silver Screen, Christopher Edge writes a very thrilling novel once again following the adventures of Penny and Montgomery. Our two characters could not have been more thrilled when Edward Gold, who owns a small cinematography company approached them with a proposal. He intends to make a silent film of Daughter of Darkness, one of Montgomery’s stories. It is a story of ghosts, murder, revenge, and betrayal set in the swamplands of Devon. They are even more excited to work with the man as he has access to a new technology called the Veritescope which can capture sound alongside images. This is huge at a time when picture-only movies were all you could have. Monty and Penny head to Devon to film the story in a tiny mining village. But once they arrive, bizarre things begin to happen as it seems that not only the house but also the story too is haunted. Mr Gold is acting weird and creepy while the characters are taken over by the spirits of the characters they are playing. Working with Alfie, her assistant at the magazine, Penny begins to investigate. It is a well-researched but creepy story with a very authentic feel of place and time.
Christopher Edge Published The Black Crow Conspiracy the third of the Twelve Minutes to Midnight series in 2014. This is a fun read fit for readers of all ages that once again follows the life and times of Penelope Tredwell. She has recently been experiencing writer’s block which puts the popular Montgomery Flinch stories she has been writing in jeopardy. But then she receives an anonymous letter about the theft of Crown Jewels that provides the spark for a new story. The story had been well received but things turned sour when the police arrived claiming that her story was not fiction but truth. She will do anything to clear her magazine’s name and hence starts to investigate. A few days into her investigations, she discovers a mysterious cabal of science who have links to the mysterious glowing green men who are reputed to be able to walk through walls. Combining supernatural flair, some history, a smart and strong female protagonist, and penny dreadful stories, it is one of the best from Chris Edge.
