Main character Melody Lee takes the reader along with her on a journey to go the very place where all trends are born– Seoul, Korea. There she moves with her family and is going to have to take on a lot of new things all at once. She’s going to have to start an all new life at a new school and while she’s adjusting, she might even start a new romance for herself.
Melody has always wanted to know more about the Korean side of her Korean-American heritage, but she never counted on it happening like this. She just made one little transgression after school and now she is finding out that her parents have decided that the best idea possible is to move her and her mom from New York City to Seoul to join her father, and that’s going to happen basically without any warning. Oh, and it’s also going down immediately.
Melody hardly has the chance to wish a goodbye to her best friend before she is on a plane. Because of this she is angry, resentful, upset and homesick all at once. Sure, she’s messed up, but she didn’t think that what she did would warrant a reaction this large.
It isn’t too long before she finds that she is settling in even more into the home there, which is more luxurious than she would have thought. She’s making new friends while at school and is starting to find out the different cool things that come with living in Korea. The fashion there is very cool, the food is delicious, her dad has a black card that he’s willing to share, and there are also cute boys there that she likes hanging out with.
Melody was worried that life in Seoul would be completely boring and horrible, but it turns out that there are a lot of amazing things about it to enjoy. But all is not what it appears as the perfect surface starts to be marred with cracks.
There are still family secrets and plenty more to adjust to and find out about. It all seems like just the price that she has to pay in order to have a fancy new life, but is it more than that? And is Melody willing to pay this price? Read this fantastic debut book from Claire Ahn to find out what happens!

Charlotte Goh is a high school student who is trying to be an Asian-American fashion influencer. She wants more than anything to use the platform to try and build herself a life and lift her family out of hard times. But she’s about to discover that becoming an influencer may cost her more than she ever thought that it could.
It’s tempting to only think about the benefits that being a popular influencer can bring, and so many of them are financial. Charlotte Goh is just 17 years old but she’s already doing what she can to manage two different personas. These include being a good Korean daughter and then there is her other side, the NYC fashion influencer.
Charlotte has seen that the algorithm has made others successful, rich, and famous, and she wants that to be her, too. Her best friend Steven is not all that supportive of her ambition, but that’s all right. Charlotte isn’t going to let one person scoffing at her ruin her drive or keep her from getting to where she wants to be.
Charlotte doesn’t want success just for herself but for her family too. She makes posts in the hope that she’ll be able to help support her family and end their struggles. One night she is posting about a racist experience at an influencer event and it ends up being her big break. Charlotte goes viral and all of a sudden is enjoying the attention and the fame that she has always wanted.
She doesn’t think that being popular would change her, but the perks of it all are really good. She has new friends in her circle, one of the hottest guys in Hollywood is paying attention to her, and companies are falling over themselves in order to sponsor her.
The more that Charlotte becomes a part of the influencer world, the more that she finds that it’s not a space that encourages you to be yourself and it also is a field that demands a lot. Charlotte may have to give up more than she thought in order to be a part of this world. Does that also mean putting the feelings that she thinks she has for Steven on the back burner? Can she stay true to who she is or will she find that she’s outgrown her former life? Read Bad Influence by Claire Ahn to find out!
