Women were never destined to have anything in this life, so they took it anyway. The year is 1922 and Eleanor Mackridge is a young lady of twenty years old. She is also horrified when it comes to the future that she sees being mapped out for her to follow, one where she will either choose to serve the upper classes or find a nice man to marry.

She was able to make herself useful when she provided a service working in a munitions factory during the war. She was the one handling the explosives since the men were gone and off fighting and someone had to take over for them. Now things are winding down and society is going ‘back to normal’. Returning to status quo in this case means women returning back to the places that they are perceived to rightfully belong.

Despite all of this, Eleanor has never been someone who bought into what is expected of her by society. When she comes into contact with a member of the Forty Elephants, a gang led by women, she is impressed. These women all awe her, with their propensity to wear diamonds and furs while drinking gin and champagne, and do what they want– including taking what they want without asking or waiting to have permission.

Now Eleanor is starting to be able to picture a new future for herself– one where she is able to serve, to get married, to even steal. She feels that men are going to let you down, but diamonds provide the type of reliability and support that is forever. Clare shows the reader a criminal underworld of London in the twenties and takes them on a rip-roaring adventure along with Eleanor that they won’t soon forget. Poor Girls is a 2024 novel by Clare Whitfield. This is a psychological thriller and a story about coming of age that readers will not want to miss. Have you been looking to add something new to your reading list? This might just be the perfect selection for you, especially if you like suspense and not knowing what is about to happen next.

A father is absent, a girl has gone missing, and there are family secrets buried deep down. When it comes to the truth, is it something that is even worth looking for?

Prue is a girl of 16 years old and she has always grown up being around secrets. She remembers things from her past such as her grandmother’s stern silence, the breakdowns that her mother would have crying, the whispered reassurances from her aunt.

Now her mother has had another episode and in its aftermath Prue has decided that now she is at last old enough to handle the truth. She wants to know the thing that makes the adults around her distracted and tight lipped, as well as why her mother can’t deal with things. She also wants to know who her dad is most of all.

Prue must spend the summer in the Shetlands along with her aunt Ruth and uncle Archie, who is new to the family. She shows up wanting to find some answers but soon finds that she is captured in a twisty web made up out of family secrets, betrayals, and maybe even murder.

Set during a summer in Shetland, this is a psychologically tense novel that revolves around one young woman and her hunt to find the truth even as she starts to realize that all of the lies around her have been working to keep her safe. This is an emotional book that Louise Beech refers to as a ‘stunning read’. Check it out for yourself to see what you think of it and to find out what happens in the end!
