Connor Hutchinson is an accomplished published author and artist.
He was born in a suburb of Manchester called Levenshulme. He says that he has been fascinated by the city’s people and its culture ever since he began painting in high school. Connor describes his work as aiming to be a representation of this culture, evolving around the places that he knows the best and the people that he has met along the way.
He recounts that he has a fascination with the every day, the ‘mundanity and bleak reality of tasks or forms of entertainment we use for escapism’. He says that he also hopes to capture expressions, actions or snapshots of life that may be otherwise disregarded or overseen.
He says that by putting a lens on the silent moments in life, he tries to make his art ‘relatable, emotive and thought-provoking as well as experimental’ using different techniques and materials. Most of his portraits are acrylic on canvas, but he also works on used/unused betting slips, newspapers, beer mats, and different materials as they relate to the actions or characters depicted in the painting.
Using these types of materials is able to give more background and depth to the subjects and give the viewers a more 3-D viewpoint on not only who they are but what they are like and what is interesting to them.
Hutchinson relates that the main reason behind his art is enjoyment and expression. He likes to paint people that interest him and likes to share little moments that he sees of modern day life in Britain. The artists says that as with all things in his work, he has an ambition to transform the unseen into art while presenting cultural identities and challenging stereotypes.

Being on your deathbed and thinking about all the times that you said no to having fun just because you were a little tight on money? Jamie Fletcher imagines himself being in this scenario and thinks that ultimately, that is not how he wants to live.
Main character Jamie technically should think of himself as the luckiest man in Manchester, and in many ways he is. He has a great girlfriend Rebecca who is out of his league in every way– but still with him. He has a best mate named Trick who he can always rely on to go out with him for a drink, and he has a great career working at a funeral home that stays busy and thus in business.
Taking care of the dead is something that Jamie is good at and it is a job that he takes seriously. He takes great attention to every detail and gives it his all so that the dead can have the send-off that they deserve. Whether it is selecting a certain pair of stockings or playing the butcher’s favorite album to him before he is cremated, no task is too small for Jamie and he takes pride in his work.
Everything about Jamie’s life seems perfect, but not everything is as ideal as it appears to be. Jamie has been guarding a huge secret, and no one in his life knows about it. Only the dead are trusted to keep his secret– that Jamie has a massive gambling addiction.
The addiction has left him in huge sums of debt, something that he’s managed to keep hidden from the living in his life so far. But he’s finding that soon he will be out of ways to keep it under wraps and then he is scared that everyone in his life will desert him when they find out the truth– and that he has been keeping it from him the entire time.
Rebecca ends up bringing up the notion that they buy a home together, and Jamie really wants to. If he can manage to cover his tracks and make even more money, he’ll be sitting pretty. He goes up to the bookies and ends up placing the biggest bet he’s ever made.
Jamie’s leaving it all to chance and while he’s been lucky in the past, he’s relying entirely on luck to keep him afloat now and get him to the end. Is this the boldest decision he’s ever made that will pay off in the end, or has making that bet mean that he has sealed his fate?
This could be the move that changes it all for him or sinks him for good. Can Jamie keep his luck going long enough to give his girlfriend the dream life together that she deserves? Or is he about to find out that it is just a matter of time before his luck runs out? Jamie’s got to keep his fingers crossed and you’ve got to get a copy of this book to find out!
