Cornelia Read is an American published author.
She has traveled all over the world but does have a lack of compatibility with flying, something that has led to her vomiting in many of the different airports she has frequented. She was born in Manhattan but describes her childhood as hopping from New York to different places like Oahu and California.
Cornelia is familiar with old-school WASP culture as she was born into the tenth generation of her mother’s family to live on the Centre Island of Oyster Bay. She grew up close to Big Sur by her divorced parents, people she describes as ‘hippie-renegades’. Her childhood mentors were single mothers, surfers, Sufis, Black Panthers, draft dodgers, Ansel Adams, farm workers on strike, and more.
When she was 15 years old she went east to go to boarding school and then college on a full scholarship. While she was in New York she was a debutante at the Junior Assemblies, getting back into the Social Register once more after having been expelled following a social faux pas in the form of a tantrum thrown by her mother’s boyfriend’s wife.
The author likes to read frequently, even if it is the back of a cereal box or assembly instructions. Some of her favorite writing came on a bootleg Hong Kong Dylan tape that said ‘Bowling in the Wind’ was Side A’s first cut.
She is now at home raising her twin daughters and describes herself as being the ‘world’s worst housewife’. Her youngest daughter has severe autism. She says that the motto her family goes by for the past few generations was ‘never a dull moment’.
One of her favorite songs is “Sweet Dreams” by Patsy Cline. She also enjoys the song “King Bee” as performed by The Rolling Stones.
She is known for her novels of the Madeline Dare series, an original fictional series of mystery stories that she created. The debut novel A Field of Darkness was nominated for multiple awards, including the Edgar Award for best first novel. She received the 2008 National Endowment for the Arts Creative Writing Fellowship as well.
These days, Read lives in Berkeley, California. There she has her Great-Grandmother Fabyan’s Society of Mayflower Descendants membership parchment shown at the back of her tiny linen closet. She is married to a man with a job, bucking family tradition. She appreciates her readers and thanks them for their interest in her work.
Cornelia says that when she grows up, she would like to be Winston Churchill or Batman.
A Field of Darkness is the first book in the Madeline Dare series of fictional novels by Cornelia Read. If you’ve been keeping your eyes open for something interesting to read that is entertaining but not too dark a mystery, consider this your next must-read book!
This story features main character Madeline Dare, who comes from an aristocratic family that has been on the decline for some time. She would be the first one to declare that the money they have is so old that it has completely run out. She’s a former socialite who has had to completely adapt to a new existence and now has become a tough talking near journalist who lives in the rust belt of upstate New York.
She wants to change up her lifestyle and have something that is more fun but it seems like the end is nowhere in sight. Then things get shook up a little when a set of dog tags located at an old murder site ends up being traced back to her family somehow. Maddie is just shocked enough to spring into action.
Madeline goes on a search that will take her everywhere from Syracuse to Long Island’s Gold Coast. The more that she searches, the more that she finds. She might not end up being happy with what she discovers when she unearths dark secrets that could end up challenging all that she believes in.
Will Maddie regret becoming an amateur sleuth or was the former socialite made for detective work? Can she make any progress or will it all be for nothing when her life is in danger? Read the first book in this series to find out!
The Crazy School is the second book in the Madeline Dare series by Cornelia Read. This is an interesting novel featuring Maddie Dare, former socialite and debutante, back for another set of adventures.
Madeline has at last gotten out of New York and found a new home in Massachusetts in the Berkshire Mountains. Her husband had a job offer that fell through and once it does she comes on board as a teacher at the boarding school Santangelo Academy which is for disturbed teenagers.
Behind the fancy gates of the academy, she finds a realm where the students and teachers have to submit to a strange therapeutic regimen set forth by the founder. She’s uncomfortable from the start about Dr. Santangelo, but when she starts to put forth doubt about his methods, she is shocked to find that the teachers don’t really want to stand up for themselves.
They’re more interested in turning on each other than confronting this or protecting the students. When something goes down that confirms her suspicions and hints at a darker secret history at the heart of the academy herself, she’s had it. It’s time to get to the bottom of this once and for all.
Maddie must find the most rebellious students in the school and join forces if she wants to take down the threat when she gets cut off from the outside. Can she and a small group of free thinkers save everyone there or are they simply outnumbered?
What will happen when they attempt to take on Dr. Santangelo and those too scared to go up against him? Read The Crazy School by Cornelia Read to find out what happens in the end in this entertaining read that will have you turning the pages to find out what happens next.
