Author Coco Simon is a well-known children’s book editor and writer. She has personally written nearly one hundred books for children, tweens and young adults; many of which have had great success. The Cupcake Diaries series is perhaps one of her most popular pieces of work, a wonderful tween series consisting of 29 volumes to date.
Coco Simon absolutely loves to bake, and has used her long standing dream of opening up her own cupcake shop to breathe life into this delightful tween series. The Cupcake Diaries; written by Coco Simon; is a realistic fiction series, which follows the day to day social, academic and family lives of four middle school girls; Katie Brown, Emma Taylor, MiaVelaz-Cruz and Alexis Becker. Each of the girls has the opportunity to tell the story from their own perspective, as they rotationally take charge of the narration of the storyline by book.
Plotline
The first book in the Cupcake Diaries series is titled ‘Katie and the Cupcake Cure’. The storyline begins when Katie Brown returns to school from summer vacation for her very first day of middle school. She is disappointed and anxious to discover that her best friend Callie has been indoctrinated in to the ‘cool girls’ group at school and doesn’t even seem to notice that Katie exists. Even worse for Katie, she is not invited to come along for the ride and is left alone for lunch. Rather than dwelling on past relationships however, Katie decides to take her social life in to her own hands and make new, long-lasting relationships with several of her other classmates.
Katie’s revelation takes place after taking a bite out of a delicious cupcake that her mother packed for her school lunch for her first day- the day that everything goes wrong with her friend Callie. Katie realizes that even the worst day can be turned around by the simple joy of a delicious baked good. Taking the thought one step further, Katie realizes that many of her school mates could really use some cheering up as well and decides that a supply of delicious, home baked treats should do just the trick.
Throughout the Cupcake Diaries series Katie makes new friends, meets her first crush and deals with a broad variety of (occasionally hilarious) typical middle school scenarios. She also begins a successful Cupcake Club with the help of her new band of girl friends, which eventually turns into a flourishing baking business for the four of them.
Once Emma Taylor, Alexis Becker and Mia Velaz-Cruz are introduced as characters, the books rotate between all four girls perspectives; giving readers a little more depth to the Cupcake Diaries world. Each of the four young girls have unique, individual stories to tell, but they all come together at Cupcake Club.
The second book in the Cupcake Diaries series is titled ‘Mia in the Mix’. Mia Velaz-Cruz narrates this second book in the series, giving readers a chance to get to know her story a little better. Mia is new to the area and does not have any friends before meeting the girls at Cupcake Club.
Mia is relieved to find a group of like-minded friends where she feels like she belongs. She soon receives an offer to become part of the ‘cool girls’ group as a result of her great fashion sense however. An offer that would cut her off from the only girls that were nice to her at first. Mia is torn between popularity and remaining true to her Cupcake Club friends Katie, Emma and Alexis.
From their trips to the mall baking goods store ‘Baker’s Hollow’ to their sometimes more than weekly Cupcake Club meetings, these four characters burrow their way in to the reader’s heart with their sincere natures and sometimes frankly sweet attitudes and stories. Each girl has the opportunity to describe things from her own point of view.
Within the Cupcake Club, each girl has a different specialty that utilizes their unique talents. Katie is in charge of making recipes and baking. Emma takes care of their marketing. Mia takes care of the more fashionable side (decorating) of things. And last but not least, Alexis takes care of their finances, keeping track of their earnings and spending.
The Cupcake Club is so well by the girls’ classmates and families that they expand their business outside of school. Soon the girls are having a great time, in addition to earning a little extra money. Together these four girls have fun; sometimes crazy; adventures that are sure to make readers laugh.
Recommended for Tweens and Young Teens
While this series is clearly written for tweens between the ages of 8 and 12, it does impart relevant life lessons and situations for teenagers (up to age 14) as well. The target audience for this series is predominantly young girls, although the situations depicted are bound to be entertaining for children of both genders.
Aptly named, there is also a definite foodie influence through out the Cupcake Diaries series which can be enjoyed by readers of all ages. The author puts an impressive amount of detail in to her descriptions of each ingredient, and each baking step that the group of friends performs during their regular Cupcake Club meetings.
The Cupcake Diaries series is a wonderful, sweet story that tweens and their parents can agree on as a good read. It is chalk full of moral, child-like innocence, as well as entertaining and amusing.
Genre
The Cupcake Diaries series falls into a few very different genres. First and foremost the series is within the realistic fiction genre. The characters are all realistically mature for their depicted ages, and focused on situations and issues that children of their age range might actually encounter in real life. The series also falls in to the subcategories of foodie and tween fiction however, as a result of the specific focuses of the series.
