Dan Waddell is a published British author and journalist.
Today, he resides in West London. He is known for his many works of not only fiction but non-fiction as well. This extends to the ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’ guide to being a family tree detective, which was directly inspired by the BBC Television series by the same name.
His first fictional work was The Blood Detective. The crime novel was nominated for three awards, which also included the CWA New Blood Dagger. The book has been released in five different countries and likely will extend to more.
Dan Waddell is also the son of Sid Waddell, a commentator on darts and the person from whom he learned to never let the truth to get in the way of telling a good story. This was helpful when it came to his early career start as a tabloid journalist, which he is still recovering from.

A Notting Hill graveyard is the site of a mutilated and naked body of a man. The police investigation is being headed by Detective Chief Inspector Grant Foster along with Detective Superintendent Heather Jenkins.
Their investigation does not get far at first and they get few results or leads. But when they decide to examine the corpse more closely, they find out that the knife wounds that were carved on the victim’s chest superficially are not just random wounds but instead a series of letters and numbers carved out.
This leads to an index number that refers to a city archives file that contains birth and death certificates in addition to marriage licenses. The person that makes sense for the case is none other than Nigel Barnes, the family historian.
As multiple victims are discovered in different locations all over the city of London, each of them carrying a different mutilation but a similar index number that is carved into their skin, the police and Barnes are working around the clock as quickly as they can to try and get an idea of how the files are connected.
Nigel is not finding a whole lot of clues in the moment, so he has to take another approach. The historian has to now look through the past archives in order to solve a mystery that is the result of a string of one hundred year old murders.
That is the only way that Barnes sees that it’s going to be possible to get in the way of the gruesome killings. However, can they do it and finish the job before the killer lands another victim and continues with their spree of violence? Jenkins, Foster and Barnes are in a race against time. Before the investigation is over, one of them is going to have way too close a call with the killer.
Will the team be able to apprehend the psychopath and put them behind bars before things go from bad to even worse? Is an end to this horrible case in sight, and will they all come out of it unscathed and unharmed? Read this suspenseful crime thriller from Dan Waddell to find out!
Blood Atonement is the second novel in the Blood Detective series by Dan Waddell, also known as the Nigel Barnes series. If you liked the first book in this series or love a good suspenseful crime story, check out this book!
Katie Drake was living in Queen’s Park on her own as a single mother but with plenty of wealth to be had. Things were going well for her in life, until that life abruptly came to an end. Someone ended up cutting her throat like a savage and tearing out her tongue in an act of true derangement. Was this a random attack, or did the killer have a particular reason related to Katie for taking her life in such a brutal manner?
That is not the end of the crime spree, however. Not only has the killer mercilessly extinguished the light of Katie Drake’s life, but she has abducted Naomi, her 14 year old daughter.
Detective Inspector Grant Foster is able to observe chilly parallels and similarities with Leonie Stamey’s disappearance three years prior, a teenager at the time of the vanishing. Grant Foster still harbors hopes that he can locate Naomi alive, but every second that goes by the odds of them being able to track her down get worse.
He knows that his best shot at getting a leg up on this case and rescuing Naomi is to bring in the big guns. He calls up genealogist Nigel Barnes to work on putting the links between the two girls’ families together. Perhaps he may be able to provide a break in this case because it is sorely needed and they are rapidly running out of time.
Nigel immediately sets his attention upon the case and starts working as quickly as he can to try and pull up some clues and uncover some information that could lead to finding the young girl. He goes all the way back to 1890 in the United Kingdom when a young couple had arrived there.
The husband and wife pair were making their way out from a horrible past crime, and they have been keeping a secret that is having tons of effects in the present– bloody effects. Will the genealogist be able to work with the proper authorities to get to the bottom of this thing and find something, anything, that could help lead to Naomi’s location? Or is even his skill set not going to be enough to help out in a case that is destined to end in tragedy?
Anything could happen, but with a girl’s life on the line, Nigel and his team are determined to give this case everything they can. The rest is up to fate. Will destiny be on their side? Read this compelling thriller from Dan Waddell to find out!
