On a hot morning in November, a body is in a cattle trough and rigor mortis will set in within the course of two hours. Until that time, those slender fingers will remain below the surface of the water. They are bobbing and calling for Detective Giles to come find her.
Detective Rebecca Giles has just gotten done with interviewing Sticky Pete, an aging petty criminal, over a bunch of break and entering cases. Then a new report comes in and it starts all over again. Kayleen Ellis is 12 years old and has gone missing from her home in Muswellbrook in the Upper Hunter Valley.
Just a few hours past this, Giles is appearing as a local hero. He has solved Kayleen’s case as well as the jewelry thefts that have gone on. But the hangover from celebrating has just barely kicked in when yet another case opens up. The body of Ava Emmerson is found in horrible circumstances close by on a farm.
Giles thinks that the link between all of the cases can be found in the tragic history of the town. It could even be discovered in the case of her own mother’s strange drowning that happened thirty years previous. This is a place where not that much ends up changing, but suddenly it appears that there is a lot that is happening.
Now it appears that the life and the career of the detective herself is on the line. Can she overcome it and break through to a brighter day? Read this book to find out!
Burning Mountain is the second book in the Detective Giles series by Darcy Tindale. If you have enjoyed the first book in the series, then be sure to keep all of the crime fiction action going by checking out the sequel.
Five went up, but only four ended up coming down. It is April 2006 when Oliver, at fifteen years old, went on a hike to the lookout on Burning Mountain. But instead of being able to come back in one piece with no issue, it turns out that he completely vanishes and goes missing without a trace left of him.
His friends from school were the last ones to see him. Phil, Paul, Bell and Bob are teen friends of Oliver, but they have never been able to offer up a credible reason as to why he disappeared.
It has now been twenty years since that event. Detective Rebecca Giles gets called over to bushland on the Mount Wingen nearby. There a skull has been dug up, which brings the mystery that has been hanging around the Upper Hunter area for so long back to life.
Detective Giles thinks that they have at last found the boy that went missing so many years ago. The missing child could at last be potentially recovered. She also believes that the four friends from school that are all now in their mid-thirties have always been more aware of things and know things that they have not shared. This pertains in particular to the argument that made Oliver go down the mountain all on his own.
When she ends up talking about the case with her father, the now-retired Superintendent Benjamin Giles, she finds out that there is another suspect that is part of all of this. The suspect may end up being very close to home. Can she get to the bottom of what really happened, and does that remnant really belong to Oliver, or is he still out there somewhere? Read this crime novel to find out!
