Dee Ernst

Dee Ernst is an American author who writes romance novels, and she has built a steady following by keeping her stories grounded in real life. Her books tend to focus on characters who already have some years behind them, which is a nice change from younger heroines. She does not rely on perfect people or fairy tale logic. Instead, she gives readers protagonists who are smart, a little worn in places, and easy to root for.

One of her real strengths as a writer is how she crafts those main characters. They talk and act like actual humans, which means they can be funny, unsure, stubborn, or kind without feeling like cardboard cutouts. That makes her stories more entertaining to read, because the conflicts grow naturally from who the people are. You are not sitting there wondering why someone would act that way. It all just clicks.

On top of that, Ernst has a clear gift for putting together compelling stories with engaging narratives. She lets the plot unfold through small moments, quiet conversations, and believable decisions rather than big, loud twists. The romance feels earned, and the pages turn easily without any saccharine or over the top language. Reading her work often feels less like escaping and more like checking in on a friend.

Ernst entertains readers around the world by staying true to her own voice. She does not chase after trends or try to copy what is popular at the moment. Her books feel honest because she writes about what she knows. That honesty travels well across different countries and cultures.

Her stories often feature older heroines, second chances, and a light sense of humor. Those are things she clearly cares about as a writer. She does not force drama or add fake conflict to make things more exciting. Instead, she trusts that real life problems and small romantic moments are enough to keep people interested. Many readers seem to agree with her.

Dee Ernst shows no signs of slowing down with her writing. She continues to work on new projects that fit her honest and grounded style. Readers can expect more characters who feel real and more stories that stay true to who she is. There is plenty more to look forward to down the road.

Early and Personal Life

Dee Ernst grew up in New Jersey, and that background shaped much of her outlook on life. She fell in love with reading when she was very young. By age ten, she had already decided to become a writer, even if it took longer than planned to get there.

She went to college, moved around some, and held a few different jobs. She was also married twice with two daughters. When her second daughter was born, right around the time she turned forty, she started thinking seriously about what to do with the rest of her life. That moment pushed her to finally give writing a real try.

These days, she still lives in New Jersey and writes full time. She shares her home with her husband and her daughter. Her own life experiences, from moving to working to raising kids, have fed into her growth as an author and continue to inspire her work.

Writing Career

Dee Ernst enjoyed reading chick lit and romantic comedy, but she grew tired of heroines in their twenties who could not figure out how to reach for what they wanted. So she turned to writing about women who reminded her of herself. Those leads came across as older, sure of themselves, and full of lived experience.

She landed an agent at one point, though no book sales came from that arrangement. Then in 2010, she chose to self publish her work. A title called Better Off Without Him hit Amazon’s bestseller list in 2012, and after that she signed up with Montlake Publishing, which brought that same book back out and released A Slight Change of Plan, brought out in 2013.

From those early wins, she has worked across multiple genres like cozy mystery, young adult fantasy, and women’s fiction. She has switched between longer novels and shorter pieces and has also written for Lake Union Publishing. On top of that, she self publishes under a personal imprint called 235 Alexander Street, and she keeps writing even now.

Lucy Checks In

Dee Ernst wrote the contemporary romance titled Lucy Checks In. The book arrived in stores on August 16, 2022. Griffin served as the publisher for this release.

Lucia Giannetti needs a fresh start after losing her job and her relationship when a hotel owner ran off with millions. Now forty nine and unemployed, she takes a position in Rennes, France to manage the rundown but charming Hotel Paradis. Instead of fancy chandeliers, she finds herself painting walls, building a website, and getting to know an irritatingly attractive artist named Bing. The question is whether she can turn the place around and find a real home in the process.

Many will find this story easy to enjoy from start to finish. The main character feels real and worth rooting for. The setting in France adds a nice change of pace. Anyone looking for a light and pleasant romance novel would likely have a good time with this book.

Better Off Without Him

Dee Ernst wrote the contemporary romance titled Better Off Without Him. Montlake Romance released this book on September 24, 2013. It stands as the first title in the author’s Better series.

Mona Berman has a twenty year marriage, a career writing romance novels, and three teenage daughters, but her husband Brian leaves her for a younger French woman. She cannot write about happy endings anymore, so she changes her new book’s heroine to a woman in her forties who finds happiness without a man. With help from her assistant Anthony, good friends, and her plumber Ben, plus a new man named Mitch, she tries to handle an ex husband, a book deadline, and her troublesome Aunt Lily. The question is whether Mona can work it all out and write her own happy ending.

Readers will find this book funny and surprisingly honest about starting over. The main character feels like a real person dealing with a messy situation. The mix of family, work, and new romance keeps things interesting throughout. Anyone who likes smart and warm romantic comedies would likely enjoy this one.
