Dorothy Daniels was born in Connecticut however by the time she was a full time writer, during the middle part of the 1960s, she was living in California. Initially, she was an English teacher at this state college however later penned articles that appeared in national magazines, which lead to her having a career as a writer of gothic paperback novels for the most part.
Lancer Books, which published over 20 of her novels, proclaimed her as America’s Most Popular Gothic Novelist while Pocket Books claimed that her gothic novels sold more than 11 million copies by the middle of the 1970s. Her roughly 146 novels were published by about a dozen paperback publishers, some of which had as many as 4 printings while some just had the 1. Warner and Lancer published more than 60 of her books alone.
Most of her novels were written in the first person, and this was a bit of a trademark of hers; since she so rarely strayed from such a pattern. Numerous novels of hers were set in the Old South. Her books were also considerably more involving plot wise and had so much more character development than other gothic novels did. Her final gothic novel, called “House of Silence”, was published late in 1980. Afterward she wrote just a handful of historical romances and her final published novel seems to be “Crisis at Valcour”, which was published in 1985.
She also published a novel, called “House of False Faces” under the pen name of Helen Gray Weston. Other pen names include Angela Gray, Helaine Ross, Cynthia Kavanaugh, Suzanne Somers, and Geraldine Thayer.
