Doyle D. Glass is an American author and sculptor. He is known for his nonfiction books Lions of Medina and Swift Sword, as well as sculpting the Texas Medal of Honor Memorial and Kentucky Medal of Honor Memorial. He first started writing and sculpting after his career working as a criminal prosecutor in Texas and Kentucky.

Doyle was born on January 22, 1962. His father worked as a rancher and an oilman. He had two brothers and made his first visit to the Alamo at 12, reading 13 Days to Glory by Lon Tinkle. The experience kicked off a fascination with history that continued on and this was followed by a love of the arts.

Glass attended Southern Methodist University, graduating in 1983 with his BA in history. He would then go back and get his Juris Doctor degree in 1988. He graduated from law school and then worked as a criminal prosecutor first as an Assistant District Attorney in Texas and then as an Assistant Attorney General in Kentucky, working on art in the meantime.

He would be inspired by the work of Augustus Saint Gaudens and in 2000 decided to retire as a prosecutor. He then started working as a professional artist. He combined his passion for art and history and came up with and designed and created the Kentucky Medal of Honor memorial, and then later the Texas Medal of Honor Memorial. He would also be inspired by the heroes of these memorials and write two nonfiction books centered around these men who fought in Vietnam.

His first book did so well that he became a full time writer. He conducted personal interviews with survivors of Operation Medina that became Lions of Medina. The book featured Medal of Honor recipient William T. Perkins and in 2008 was picked as the winner of the 2008 USA Book News Best Book Award. His second book Swift Sword was based on interviews of the survivors of Operation Swift. The new edition of the book was selected as the winner of the 2023 Pencraft Award for Best Nonfiction.

Doyle’s first two books hit the top of the Amazon bestseller lists for books about the Vietnam War as well as other categories. His historical fiction book Unthrottled is based on the life of Robert Benoist, a hero of World War II.

He is a proud husband and father and has three children with his wife. He lives in Dallas, Texas.

Swift Sword: The True Story of the Marines of MIKE 3/5 in Vietnam, 4 September 1967 is a 2014 book by Doyle D. Glass. This book tells the true story of the Marines and Navy Corpsman who fought off the NVA when they were outnumbered and outgunned as part of 1967’s Operation Swift.

This is a true story of the Vietnam War saga that was based off of fifty different interviews with veterans who were actually there as well as the relatives and loved ones of the ones who were not able to come home.

Lance Corporal Jack Swan took 164 Marines from Mike Company over the face of a knoll deep in South Vietnam’s Que Son Valley. All of the men understood that every step that they took could potentially be booby-trapped, and the enemy could potentially be hidden behind any bush. They would carry M-16 rifles that were unreliable and frequently malfunctioned, with their job being to rescue a company of leathernecks that were being besieged by the North Vietnamese Army.

As the Americans came over the knoll, Swan thought that a calm rice paddy covered with shrubs seemed a little too serene. He told his squad leader that he thought a bush moved, and his leader told him to shoot it if it moves again. The shrub ended up moving, Swan fired his gun, and the bush immediately went down.
