Drew Barrymore is an American published author as well as actress, celebrity, director, producer, talk show host, photographer, businesswoman, and entrepreneur.
You may know her from being part of the famous Barrymore family, which consists of actors. Or you may have seen her in E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, her breakout 1982 role and one that made America and the world familiar with this child star. She is a co-founder of Flower Films, a production company, and Flower Beauty, a beauty product line. Barrymore has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and has been in numerous movie roles throughout the course of her impressive career.
Born on February 22, 1975, Drew has had a wide and storied career and has received many different awards throughout the course of it. These include an Emmy Award, a Golden Globe Award, and a BAFTA. She was also selected by Time in 2023 as one of the 100 most influential people in the world.
Drew has been in a variety of films throughout the course of her career. These include E.T., Firestarter, Poison Ivy, Boys on the Side, Scream, Ever After, Never Been Kissed, Charlie’s Angels, The Wedding Singer, Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, 50 First Dates, Blended, Batman Forever, Donnie Darko, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, Music and Lyrics, He’s Just Not That Into You, Going the Distance, and more. She has also been in Grey Gardens on HBO, starred in the Netflix hit Santa Clarita Diet, and hosts The Drew Barrymore show, a daytime talk show. Whip It was her directorial debut.
Drew has also written books that have become New York Times bestsellers, such as her 1990 memoir Little Girl Lost. She has also written Find It in Everything, a photobook, and her homemaking book Rebel Homemaker as well as her book Wildflower.
She was born in Culver City, California. Her mother was Jaid Barrymore and her father was John Drew Barrymore. She also has three older half-siblings. Her parents would divorce in 1984. Her family was an acting family, with all of her paternal great-grandparents and grandparents also being actors. Her godmothers are Sophia Loren and Anna Strasberg. Her godfather is Steven Spielberg.
The author grew up in Sherman Oaks and became emancipated at fourteen years old, moving back to West Hollywood. She had a troubled childhood, becoming known now for going clubbing and partying as a young girl and being a regular at Studio 54. She would be placed in Rehab at 13 and then have to spend 18 months at Van Nuys Behavioral Health Hospital. At 14, she returned to rehab thanks to a suicide attempt and then stayed with David Crosby for three months to be around people who were committed to being sober. She became emancipated and then moved into her own apartment at 15.
Barrymore is also known for her appearances on Late Show with David Letterman, in which she famously flashed the host. She also starred in Playboy, prompting her godfather Spielberg to send her a quilt and a note that encouraged her to cover up. She also had a small role in the 1996 slasher thriller Scream by Wes Craven, which was instantly iconic and remains one of the most-recognized scenes and characters in horror to this day.
Drew announced that she was taking an indefinite hiatus from acting in 2021, after having launched The Drew Barrymore Show in September 2020. She launched Drew Magazine in June 2021. She also continued her talk show during the WGA strike. As a result, the National Book Foundation decided to not move forward with Drew as the host of the National Book Awards. Barrymore would eventually postpone production until the end of the strike, citing her having listened ‘to everyone’. CBS supported her in this decision.
Drew has been named an Ambassador Against Hunger in 2007, later donating a million of her own money towards the World Food Programme’s cause. She would later launch a women’s fashion line called Dear Drew in collaboration with Amazon online which also launched in a NYC pop-up shop. In 2024, Etsy named her their Chief Gifting Officer.
Barrymore’s love life has been busy as well. She was briefly engaged in 1991 before moving on to Jamie Walters, a relationship that ended in 1993 despite his proposal. She would date Jeremy Thomas in 1994, and the two got married before separating 19 days later. Barrymore would file for divorce, and it was finalized in 1995. She would then date more men, including Eric Erlandson, Tom Green (engaged and then married before divorcing in 2002), Fabrizio Moretti, actor Justin Long, and Will Kopelman, whom she married in 2012. They would divorce in 2016, after having two children together.
