The year is 1912, and the setting is England. For Lady Cecilia Bates, Danby Hall is the only place that she has ever known that she can call home. There are tough rules of etiquette to follow, and she knows that her mother wants nothing more than to get her married and to see her start her new life.

Despite all of this, Lady Cecilia has a tough time picturing herself living anywhere but Danby Hall. The only problem is that she never anticipated that her family would run into any problems keeping this place. But an agricultural depression has taken over the countryside and with this the Bates family is seeing that their possession of the hall is in danger.

This is a huge issue but there might yet be a solution. This has come in the form of Annabel Clarke, an imperious and intimidating American heiress. The Earl and Countess of Avebury have promised themselves that it will be Patrick, Cecilia’s brother, who will be able to go after Annabel’s hand in marriage and tie the knot, inheriting her fortune as well.

Normally this would be a good plan, but Patrick is such a lackluster suitor that the family knows they have to help him out if they want him to be more appealing. So the Bates family along with staff become very busy planning for a large house party to be thrown once the heiress arrives.

Then a guest passes away after they take a drink from a glass that is intended for Annabel. It starts to become apparent that the Bates might have a more serious problem on their hands and there is a killer in their midst. This is even more stress on top of their desperation to get Patrick to walk down the aisle and better the status of their family.

The scandal takes over Danby and as it does, Cecilia knows what she has to do. She sets out into the world to track down the person responsible. She could accomplish this on her own must likely, but she chooses to get some assistance from Jane (Annabel’s maid) and Jack (her own very smart cat). With a little help and a little luck, she just might be able to figure out who the murderer is and bring them to justice.

If everything goes well, she can put this whole thing behind her family and hopefully provide some positive momentum towards finding a way to hang onto Danby Hall. Cecilia finds that she has just two possibilities. A resident of Danby lost their cool and attempted to take down the heiress, or the killer is one of their guests who wants to sabotage the family and see their ultimate downfall.

It’s up to Cecilia and her cat to figure out what really happened and who committed this heinous crime. The fate of her family hangs in the balance and so the pressure is on. Instead of participating in the fight for ladies’ rights, Cecilia finds herself instead on the tail of a killer as yet another case falls into her lap.

Lady Cecilia doesn’t really know what to do with herself these days. She feels somewhat adrift in the world and doesn’t have much interest in assisting with planning her brother’s wedding, which is coming up quickly. It’s making her think about whether she should find her own partner and land herself a husband– something she dismisses since she has no interest in that at the current time.

What is actually making her excited is the Woman’s Suffrage Union meeting that she went to. It feels like she is part of something bigger than her and she is really making a difference. Cecilia has been inspired by the leader of the group, Amelia Price. She wants to join the Union, but it would be better off if her parents don’t know. If she does join, she’ll most likely have to hide it from them.

That’s her plan, but she has time to think of little else when Amelia is discovered dead at the bottom of the stairs of her house. More curious is the fact that her Votes for Women sash has been torn off. Cecilia understands that she has to find the killer, which is the most important thing.
