All In Her Head is a nonfiction book from Dr. Elizabeth Comen. It was nominated for a Goodreads Choice Award for Readers’ Favorite Nonfiction in 2024. This is a fascinating history of women’s health as it has never been told before.
For as long as a time that medicine has been in practice, Comen says that women’s bodies have been ‘treated like objects to be practiced on’. They have been examined, ignored, idealized, sexualized, shamed, subjugated, mutilated, and dismissed.
The history of women’s healthcare is a story in which women have often been voiceless. It is a narrative written from the perspective of men who put themselves up as authorities on the female of the species, yet uninformed by the personal thoughts, fears, pain, voices, and experiences of women. The result is a societal and cultural legacy that continues to shape the mistreatment and care of women.
While the modern age has been able to see significant advances in the medical field, the idea that female bodies are flawed inversions of the male ideal continues to linger. As do the social stigmas and ignorance that shapes women’s health and their relationships with their own bodies.
Dr. Elizabeth Comen pulls back the curtain on the collective medical history of women to introduce us once more to our whole bodies– seeing how they work, featuring the doctors and patients whose experiences and perspective lay the foundation for modern medical thought, and the oversights that still remain unaddressed.
With the empathy and knowledge of a physician, Dr. Comen advocates for and empowers for women to understand ourselves and advocate for care that prioritizes healthy and joyous lives. This is an eye-opening memoir of women’s health and history that is a must-read!
