They married at the end of 1979, but he then switched from heroin to alcohol. That drinking hurt his music and helped end his marriage. In the eighties, he started to recover from alcoholism and became a father. Then his four year old son Conor died in a sudden accident. Instead of going back to drugs, Clapton turned to music and wrote the sad song “Tears in Heaven.”
