Publication Order of Short Stories/Novellas

Eva Baltasar

Eva Baltasar is a Catalan poet and writer who has built a strong name for herself through her books of poetry. Over the years she has published several collections, and those works have earned her quite a few awards. On top of that, she has managed to sell the translation rights to her poetry into multiple languages. So her voice as a poet has reached readers far beyond Catalonia.

As a writer of fiction, she has a real talent for making characters feel like people you might actually know. Her protagonists come across as thoughtful and complicated, but never in a way that feels forced or showy. That is part of what makes her stories so entertaining to read, because you end up caring about what happens to them. She does not need big drama or fancy tricks to keep a reader hooked.

Her real gift lies in building compelling stories with narratives that move forward in a natural way. She avoids long, winding descriptions and instead keeps the action clear and engaging from start to finish. Even when the topics are serious, the storytelling stays lively and never drags. That balance between thoughtful character work and a fast moving plot is what makes her writing stand out.

Baltasar connects with readers around the world by staying honest to her own style. She does not change her voice to fit what is popular or easy to sell. Instead, she writes from a place that feels personal and true to her, and that honesty ends up traveling well across borders. Translators can carry her words into other languages, but the real bridge is the raw way she shows human thoughts and feelings.

Part of what makes her work so global is how she focuses on everyday emotions that most people have felt at some point. Her characters might live in Catalonia, but their worries, joys, and quiet struggles are not tied to just one place. A reader in Japan or Brazil or Mexico can still see something familiar in the pages. That shared human ground is what turns a local writer into someone who speaks to a wide audience.

Looking ahead, Eva Baltasar shows no sign of slowing down. She continues to write and create, which means more stories and poems will likely reach her readers in time. Given her steady output and growing international audience, the future looks busy but natural for her. So fans old and new can probably expect more sharp, true to her work in the years ahead.

Early and Personal Life

As a child growing up in Barcelona, Spain, Eva Baltasar was surrounded by the everyday energy of a busy city. Born on August 26, 1978, she found early chances to explore books and stories like many young readers do. Over time, that quiet interest in reading turned into a deeper pull toward writing her own words.

She later went to the University of Barcelona and earned a bachelor’s degree in Pedagogy. That study of how people learn and grow may have shaped how she looks at characters and their inner worlds. It also probably gave her useful tools for thinking about human behavior, which shows up in the careful way she writes her protagonists.

From poetry to fiction, she has kept growing as an author by staying curious and putting in the work. Her inspirations likely come from daily life, the people around her, and the simple act of paying close attention. And because she started young and kept going, she has built a steady, grounded career that still feels open to whatever comes next.

Writing Career

Eva Baltasar built her writing career first through poetry. She published several books of verse over the years and earned multiple awards for that work. Those prizes include the Miquel de Palol in 2008, the Benet Ribas in 2010, the Gabriel Ferrater in 2015, and the Òmnium Prize in 2020.

After establishing herself as a poet, she moved into fiction with her first novel, Permafrost. That book received the Catalan Booksellers Award in 2018. Translation rights for Permafrost have also been sold into multiple languages, and she continues to write even now.

Permafrost

On November 8, 2018, Literatura Random House published Eva Baltasar’s novel Permafrost. The book came out in its original Catalan version on that date. A later translation by Nicole d’Amonville Alegría also exists for other language editions, and it’s the first in the Triptic series.

In this novel, permafrost refers to the frozen ground layer, and it also acts as a shield for the main character. Written from a first person point of view, the story follows a young woman who keeps the outside world at a distance. She sees everything around her as shallow, so she runs from her controlling mother and her overly cheerful sister. Even with suicidal thoughts, she still dives into sex with women, literature, and art, creating a constant pull between pleasure and death.

Readers will enjoy how real and raw the main character feels on every page. The book keeps a tight, fast moving tension between dark thoughts and physical pleasures. A person who likes sharp humor and honest storytelling will find a lot to appreciate here. This novel offers an entertaining read that stays with someone long after finishing it.

Boulder

On March 12, 2020, Literatura Random House published Boulder as the second book in the Triptic series. The author is Eva Baltasar, with a later translation by Nicole d’Amonville Alegría. This edition came out after her first novel Permafrost and before the third book in the series.

In this story, the main character works as a cook on an old cargo ship, a job she loves for its loneliness and freedom. Life changes when a woman from her past convinces her to leave the sea, settle down, and help raise a child. The novel asks what motherhood does to a woman who once lived wildly, leaving only her nickname, Boulder, which means a large rock alone in the middle of nowhere.

Many will find Boulder hard to put down once they start. The main character feels rough but real, and her journey pulls a person in right away. Anyone who likes honest stories about big life changes will enjoy this book. It is a fast, sharp read that stays with you after the last page.
