This is a celebration of what keeps humanity together, stretching across history and battle lines to do so.
The Syracusans have come up with a novel idea of what to do with the Athenians who have tried to invade their city and have survived but have been captured in the Peloponnesian War on the island of Sicily. It’s not that original, but it is effective.
They’ve decided that they’re going to take the prisoners of war and put them in a rock quarry, leaving them behind to rot. Lampo and Gelon are two potters who are unemployed and have been looking for ways that they can pass the time. They also like drinking and poetry.
Lampo and Gelon decide to go down to the quarry, where they intend to give food to the Athenians. The only catch is if the prisoners will be able to produce some lines from Euripides, the great playwright.
The two friends come up with a plan between them to put on a production of Medea in entirety. They may not like the people, but that doesn’t mean that they don’t still retain an appreciation for their art. The plan goes forward, and opening night is coming up.
But the closer that opening night gets, some events start to get put into play. It is then that the heroes start to have the realization that putting on a play in this case might be as dangerous as it can get. They may be risking more than they realized personally and may even have their friendship torn apart by this little caper.
It’s clear that the two pals have a little too much time on their hands, and they’ve shunted energy that would have been devoted into doing their jobs into this play with the prisoners of war. Can they follow through on the production without regretting it? Or are the potters about to discover that their silly idea will have more consequences than they realize? Read Glorious Exploits by Ferdia Lennon to find out!
