G.T. Karber grew up in a small town in Arkansas, and is the son of a civil rights attorney and a judge. He is a computer programmer, mystery writer, and the creator of “Murdle”, the #1 Sunday Times and USA Today bestselling murder mystery puzzle book series that is available in 30 languages.

“Murdle” was the UK Christmas #1 bestseller in 2023, making Karber the third non-British writer to achieve a Christmas number one, after Michelle Obama and Dan Brown.

Karber graduated summa cum laude from the University of Arkansas with a degree in English literature and mathematics. Then he moved to Los Angeles, where he got his Masters in Fine Arts from the University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts.

In 2022, he created Murdle (which is a web-based daily murder mystery game that is modeled off of Wordle), after being a mystery enthusiast.

Karber made the first Murdle just on a coffee shop napkin for a friend that loves murder mysteries and puzzles, and he loved it. So Karber put a program together which generated it, and put it online, and other people wound up liking it as well. One of these people was Melissa Edwards (now Karber’s agent). She phoned him up and said that she saw the potential for a book, and she was so right.

But Karber believes that it only works because he made it for a friend first. If he’d tried to reverse-engineer some puzzle which could become a bestselling book series, then it would have just been impossible. But since he made it for a friend and he liked it, others did as well.

The story develops as you solve puzzles because you’re supposed to have the same experience of the daily online puzzle. He and his editor (Courtney Littler) helped him figure out the basic structure of it. As you’re also provided with an ongoing story that’d be compelling to those that had already done the daily puzzle a thousand times already.

Much of his time he spent on the narrative. He traced out this general arc using a story wheel structure of the different moods for each of the sections. Then he attempted to fill in all the major story beats and twists. And then he generated the puzzles. However it was a tough challenge translating the whole thing from an overarching outline to these 100 unique murder mysteries. Often, he’d let it randomly generate certain aspects, and then write around that. Sometimes it would take him in a totally different direction which was far more interesting.

He had a bunch of favorite parts though. Designing the exhibits was a ton of fun. Learning more about Irratino and Logico’s relationship. One thing he liked was re-using icons in playful ways, like how the statue of this ancient god is the same exact icon as the Oscar. That was fun as well.

When he first made Murdle, Irratino was Logico’s arch-enemy, as he was the opposite of him in every possible way. However some of the daily players soon picked up on their chemistry, so Karber wrote them together more often and developed their relationship more.

The timeline was the toughest part. He had to turn in a draft just a few months after selling the book. So it was a total sprint. However he had a major advantage in that the daily website existed already, and people already told him which parts they liked and wanted to see more of.

He is the General Secretary of the Hollywood Mystery Society, which is a theater ensemble and cinematic social club, he has overseen the staging of over 30 immersive whodunits in the LA area. Karber’s first movie is a horror comedy musical whodunnit, called “Killer Party”, that he co-wrote and directed.
