Did I Ever Tell You? is a 2024 memoir by Genevieve Kingston. If you really enjoy nonfiction and memoirs in particular, this is one that you might really like to check out. It is the true story of a mother’s love that is kept alive through letters, gifts, and time.

Genevieve Kingston was only eleven years old when she lost her mother. But what she might not have anticipated was that she was left with more than just her memories alone. Her mother had made sure to think of her, getting ready a chest filled with handwritten letters and gifts that had been carefully chosen, intended for the many special days coming ahead and the birthdays and major points in life that they would not be able to share.

As this story starts out, there are only three packages left for Gwen to unpack. They are intended for her engagement, her marriage, and her first baby. The presence sparks a reflection on the gifts but also the person who left them for her.

This is more than just a coming of age story, instead being a personal journey of the author as she makes her way through grief, her memories, and the lasting connection that her mother has left her. Every single gift that she opens shows a new insight into Gwen’s life as well as the beautiful and carefully selected legacy that her mother left for her.

This is a book that is thoughtfully told and very well written. If you’ve ever gone through loss or mourned the death of a parent that you were close to, this is a book that you’re going to want to check out. Keep a box of tissues close as you follow along with Genevieve through different stages of her life and as she mourns and celebrates life by getting a copy of ‘Did I Ever Tell You?’ today.
