Geraldine DeRuizer
Geraldine DeRuizer writes books and speaks to audiences all over the world, and she also runs an award winning blog called the Everywhereist. Her work falls into three main categories like American humor, memoir, and travel writing. People know her for being honest and straightforward on the page. She does not try to sound fancy or overly clever, which makes her easy to trust as a writer.
One of the best things about her writing is how she paints a picture with very few words. When she describes a trip or something that happened to her, the reader can almost step right into that moment. She brings her experiences to life without using long or complicated sentences. That natural skill is what makes her stories feel so real and personal.
Another strong point is her gift for creating stories that pull you in and keep you reading. She has a way of building a tale that feels both engaging and effortless. The reader never gets bored or lost because she keeps things moving in a friendly and clear way. That is why so many people enjoy following her work and coming back for more.
DeRuizer shares what she knows with readers everywhere, from a small town in America to a big city in another country. She does this by writing about her own real life trips and funny moments, always staying true to how she actually talks and thinks. Her voice on the page is the same as her voice in person, honest and a little playful. That honesty helps people feel like they are getting the real story, not a polished or fake version of it.
She informs without ever sounding like a textbook or a lecture. Instead of listing facts or giving boring directions, she wraps useful details inside a personal story about missing a flight or trying a strange local food. A person learns about a new place or a strange travel rule without even noticing they are learning. That is because she never leaves her own personality behind, even when she is explaining something serious or practical.
She shows no sign of stopping or slowing down any time soon. New stories, new trips, and new books are likely already taking shape behind the scenes. Her readers can look forward to more of the same honest and living writing in the years ahead. Geraldine DeRuizer clearly has plenty left to say, and that is good news for anyone who enjoys her work.
Early and Personal Life
Growing up, Geraldine DeRuizer likely spent a good amount of time with books in her hands. Many popular writers discover their love for reading early, and she’s followed that same path. That early interest in stories probably helped her build the skills she uses today.
As she got older, her writing voice started to take shape through practice and plain hard work. Like many authors, she found inspiration in everyday moments, trips she took, and things that made her laugh. Each new piece she wrote helped her grow a little more comfortable on the page.
Today she lives in Seattle with her husband Rand Fishkin, who helped start marketing platforms called Moz and Sparktoro. That home base gives her a steady place to write and think. From there, she keeps making work that feels true to her and useful to readers around the world.
Writing Career
In 2017, she published her first memoir called All Over the Place. Five years later, in 2022, she made a small stir on Twitter with a funny opinion about tomato sandwiches not being real sandwiches. That moment showed how her humor could turn a simple food take into something people talked about.
Her second memoir came out in 2024 with the title If You Can’t Take the Heat. The book received positive reviews and got a feature in BookPage magazine that March. EATER also listed it as one of the best food books to read that spring, and she keeps writing even after those two books.
All Over the Place
Geraldine DeRuiter wrote the travel memoir “All Over the Place”. The book came out on May 2, 2017. PublicAffairs acted as the publisher for that release.
Some travelers move through the world with ease and confidence, but Geraldine DeRuizer is not that type of person. She gets motion sickness easily, fears pigeons, and has almost no sense of direction. Still, losing a job she truly loved pushed her to travel anyway, and that experience became the heart of her book. Along the way she learned about family, including her Russian father and Italian mother, and found that getting lost can sometimes lead to the right place.
Anyone who picks up this book will likely smile more than once. The writer feels real and easy to spend time with on the page. Anyone who enjoys funny travel stories with heart will probably appreciate this one. It is a good choice for a cozy afternoon at home.
If You Can’t Take the Heat
Geraldine DeRuizer wrote the food memoir “If You Can’t Take the Heat”. The book hit shelves on March 12, 2024. Crown acted as the publisher for that release.
After celebrity chef Mario Batali sent an apology for sexual harassment claims and included a recipe for cinnamon rolls, Geraldine DeRuizer decided to make that recipe herself. Her follow up essay about misogyny in the food world got millions of reads and praise from big names like Martha Stewart. It also brought her a wave of media attention and many angry threats, though she just wanted to cook a meal. In this book, she shares more food related adventures, including how she planned meals for a pretend apocalypse and once caused an international stir with a bad restaurant review.
Readers new to this book will find it sharp, funny, and hard to put down. The stories feel wild but are all true, which makes them even better. Anyone who likes food writing with real bite and a strong point of view should give it a try. It is a smart and entertaining read from start to finish.
