Guy N. Smith is a British published author. He passed away on December 24, 2020.

He was born on November 21, 1939 in Hopwas, Staffordshire, part of the United Kingdom. Hopwas was a small village. His mother E.M. Weale was a pre-war historical novelist who encouraged him to write from a young age. He was published at the age of twelve years old in the local weekly newspaper The Tettenhall Observer. He wrote 56 stories for them over the course of five years, many of them being serialized, which he would collect into a book in 1990 that was titled Fifty Tales from the Fifties.

Smith recounts that his father was a bank manager and it seemed that he too was meant to be in banking from the time he was born. Guy says that he accepted it but didn’t find it interesting. In his early years working in Birmingham, he would spend his lunch hours in the Birmingham gun quarter, where he would have liked to have done an apprenticeship but his father would not allow it.

Smith’s first love was hunting and the majority of his spare time was consumed in this way. He designed a 12-bore shotgun in 1961 and wanted to follow it up with more but did not have the money to do so. To this day he still uses a Guy N. Smith short-barreled magnum. He also had a small shotgun cartridge loading business that he ran from 1960 to 1967. It ended when the suppliers of his components closed and he could not get the parts at competitive prices any longer.

In those times, Smith’s writing solely focused on shooting. He would write for the sporting magazines and write fiction for magazines as well, such as the London Mystery Selection (Smith contributed 18 stories from 1972 to 1982). In 1972, he launched what would become Black Hill Books, a second hand book-selling business. His original intention was to build this up to a full time business. He still maintained the business but found his freedom through writing.

In 1974, Smith wrote the novel Werewolf by Moonlight for the New English Library. He would write more but found success with his 1976 book Night of the Crabs, something that he found launched him as a writer. The book was a bestseller and was so popular that it led to five more books in the series and Smith continued to write, having launched around sixty horror novels by the time that he reached the mid-nineties.

The rights to Crabs were bought by Amicus in 1976, which gave Smith the opportunity to leave banking behind and get his own place. He is married to his wife Jean and they had four children together.

The author also has a fan club that came together in 1990. The Guy N. Smith Fan Club still retains an active membership and they hold a yearly convention at his home. He has also become a best-selling author in Poland, something that is a point of pride.

He writes more than horror stories and Guy uses pen names to write in other genres. Using the pen name Gavin Newman, he writes crime and mystery. He uses the pen name of Jonathan Guy to write children’s animal novels. He has written books on shooting and the country side, western novels, and even a book on writing horror fiction.

Smith decided in 1999 it was time to create his own publishing company and publish his own books. They did well and gave him a lot of satisfaction, and they planned to publish one or two books on a yearly basis. That same year he was offered the position of Gun Editor of the weekly magazine The Countryman’s Weekly, which covers field sports. He would write five illustrated feature articles a week on various topics such as big game hunting and guns.

Guy also expanded his second hand book-selling business and still did his best to make time for shooting. His wife Jean helps with the business and their four children have grown up and moved out but continue to visit. Since his passing, the family took over Black Hill Books and turned it into a limited company with future plans for audio-books, audio-dramas, and fan conventions.
