Jake Clearwater is the main character in this series, a protagonist with plenty of charisma as well as strength, according to Eric Petersen, who deemed the character ‘the new Perry Mason’ via The Internet Review of Books.
Jake is a law professor who used to be a prosecutor. He is reached out to by the Death Penalty Project to help turn the tide against the convictions of wrongful death in California. He agrees that he will take on Duane Durgeon as a client and represent him. Duane has been convicted of a double murder.
The guy himself is in person large and hulking, a bad-ass who wanted to address the jury against the advice of his counsel during the sentencing part of his trial. When he gets his desire indulged, he manages to address everyone and offend them all, from jury to prosecutors to his own lawyers and the judge, ranting and spewing profanities until finally concluding with the grand finale, which is requesting the death penalty.
Perhaps it’s a radical move and perhaps it’s the desperation of a man to take control of his fate into his own hands while feeling powerless. Despite his horrible personality and the indifference that Duane has to his own fate, Clearwater manages to speak to him and convince him that he ought to appeal.
Duane eventually is convinced and gets a retrial where he is put against a former boss and foe, John Tice, the prosecutor. The result is an intriguing story of all types of courtroom drama as well as suspense. Grab a copy of this book and read to the end to find out whether justice is served or not and find out why the San Francisco Book Review deemed this story a ‘must-read for any fan of courtroom thrillers’.
Cost of Deceit is the second book in the Jake Clearwater series written by author H. Mitchell Caldwell. If you love a good suspenseful series then be sure to check this story out and see what you think!
Max Cort is a Sheriff Lieutenant in Los Angeles. He has been accused of taking out his wife, but it’s difficult to figure out how you’re going to prosecute a murder trial when there isn’t a body.
This is a courtroom drama that is having all of the local television newscasters rushing around to get legal commentary on the matter from experts in the field. One of the stations reaches out to Jake Clearwater, law professor and attorney, so that he can handle some of the nightly updates that are being streamed on the hearing.
Jake was able to climb to fame and get some recognition for the work that he did defending a death row murderer. He not only was able to secure a retrial for his client but he was able to show who the real killer was and also get his client released from prison.
Early on in the trial of Lieutenant Cort, Jake starts to realize that it is not necessarily going to go the way of the prosecution. Then the trial results in a hung jury and the District Attorney requests that Jake be the head of the retrial team.
Jake starts to dig deeper along with the help of his team into Lt. Cort and as they do they start to make some inroads at last. They get more evidence, begin to be able to challenge the alibi of the suspect, show how ambitious and obsessive Cort really was and expose his brutality.
With a high powered attorney on their side, the defense just keeps on going with their claim that the wife simply ran away. As Jake starts to bear down on some answers, there are questions that are no longer about just whether Cort is guilty or innocent.
The final question starts to become whether the lawyers that are involved are going to make it to see how this trial turns out. Things are becoming even more dangerous than Jake could have guessed that they would. This is the second book in the legal thriller series and one that you must read for yourself to follow along and find out what happens in the end!
