Hallgrímur Helgason

Hallgrímur Helgason is an Icelandic artist who works in several different fields at once. He paints pictures, writes thriller novels, translates other people’s books, and puts out regular columns in newspapers. That mix of jobs makes him unusual, but he handles each one with a straightforward kind of skill.

As a writer, Helgason has a real way with the people in his stories. He builds his main characters carefully so they come across as believable and interesting, not flat or boring. Because he puts that effort into their personalities, readers tend to enjoy following along from one chapter to the next. His thrillers feel entertaining without needing fancy tricks or over the top drama.

What really sets him apart is his gift for shaping a plot that keeps moving. He sets up a situation, lets it develop, and finds a way to wrap it up that feels earned rather than rushed. There is no filler and no showing off. The whole thing reads like someone who knows how to tell a good story and just gets on with it.

Helgason does not chase trends to please a global crowd. He writes stories that feel right to his own sense of humor, pace, and observation. That personal honesty turns out to be exactly what draws readers from different countries. They can sense that the work comes from a real place, not from a checklist of what sells.

By staying true to himself, he ends up reaching a wide audience anyway. His thrillers use sharp dialogue and odd situations that make people smile or think. The characters do not act like generic heroes. They carry small, human flaws and make choices that feel specific to Helgason’s own way of seeing the world. That originality keeps his books fresh from one release to the next.

Readers abroad do not need to know Iceland well to enjoy his work. The emotional beats and surprising turns in his plots translate without much effort. He writes clearly and trusts the reader to keep up. That combination of personal voice and clear storytelling is what makes his books entertaining for people in many different places at once.

Looking ahead, Hallgrímur Helgason shows no sign of slowing down. He continues to paint, write, and publish on his own terms. More thrillers and columns are likely on the way from his workspace in Iceland. Readers can expect the same honest, entertaining work from him for years to come.

Early and Personal Life

Hallgrímur Helgason came into the world in Reykjavík, Iceland, on February 18, 1959. As a child and young adult, he likely spent time with books and stories like many future writers do. That quiet interest in reading would later grow into a second career alongside his painting.

He began as a visual artist showing work on walls, not on pages. Over time, writing crept into his daily life until he was doing both seriously. His most known titles include 101 Reykjavik from 1996, The Hitman’s Guide to Housecleaning from 2008, and The Thousand Degree Woman from 2011.

Two of his novels have been turned into movies, and four have been adapted for the stage. He has held more than thirty solo shows across Iceland, Sweden, Denmark, and France. His paintings can also be spotted in the permanent collections of several art museums, showing how he grew into a creator in two different fields at once. He currently lives in Reykjavík with his wife, as he continues to write to this day.

Writing Career

Hallgrímur Helgason has put out several novels over the years. His best known titles include 101 Reykjavík, which later became a popular film, along with Höfundur Íslands (Iceland’s Author), a book that would win the Icelandic Literary Prize in 2001. He also wrote Rokland (Stormland), which earned him another nomination for that same prize in 2005.

Two of his novels, 101 Reykjavík and Rokland, were nominated for the Nordic Council’s Literature Prize. His published books include 101 Reykjavik from 2000, The Hitman’s Guide to Housecleaning from 2012, and Woman at 1,000 Degrees from 2018. He continues to write and has more work on the way, with more on the horizon.

The Hitman’s Guide to Housecleaning

Amazon Crossing released Hallgrímur Helgason’s mystery crime thriller arrived on January 24, 2012. That date marks the book’s publication by that specific press.

A hitman named Tomislav Bokšić, also called Toxic, has carried out around sixty six jobs without any mistakes for the Croatian mafia in New York. He then murders the wrong target and has to run from the United States, leaving behind everything he knows. Disguised as an American televangelist named Father Friendly, he ends up on a plane heading to Reykjavík, Iceland. Stuck on an island with no gun stores and no history of hired killings, he must face his violent past and think about what comes next, with results that mix tragedy and comedy.

Anyone and everyone who picks up this book will likely have a good time with its unusual setup. The mix of crime and humor keeps the pages turning without much effort. Watching a hitman get stuck in Iceland feels fresh and fun. This one comes recommended for anyone who likes smart, funny thrillers.

Woman at 1,000 Degrees
