Playing with Matches is the first novel to come out from Hannah Orenstein. In the tradition of books such as Good in Bend comes a comedy about a young matchmaker who is balancing a messy personal life alongside the demands of eccentric clients.
Main character Sasha Goldberg has a lot going for her. She has a recent degree in journalism from NYU, an apartment with her best friend Caroline, and a relationship that would be great if her finance boyfriend Jonathan would ever look at anything aside from his BlackBerry.
But then her dream career falls through, so she uses the darkest secret of her family to land a job as a matchmaker for the elite of New York City at the dating service Bliss. Despite her inexperience, Sasha throws herself into being successful at her new career.
This means coaching clients through rejection, trolling for new catches on Tinder, and giving dating advice to people that are twice as old as her. She sets up all types of clients, including a television executive who wanted kids five years ago, a 40 year old virgin who loves baseball, and a consultant with five pages of checklists for her ideal match.
Sasha wants to help her clients find The One like she did. But then her boyfriend betrays her, and she spirals out of control. And right into the arms of a writer with a Southern drawl who she set up with one of her clients. He’s off-limits, but with her relationship so rocky, anything’s possible.
