Mercy Hill is a 2026 novel by Hannah Thurman. If you have been looking for something to enjoy that is new and hot off the press, then check out this debut and see what you think. This story revolves around four sisters who are growing up on the campus of the (underfunded) state mental hospital where their mother is the head of psychiatry. This is a story about loyalty, sisterhood, and mental health in the United States.

The Cross sisters have lived on the grounds of Mercy Hill for their entire lives. Mercy Hill is the Raleigh mental hospital that is run by their mother, who has always been a formidable figure. Ever since they were kids, JJ, Caro, Mimi and Denise have followed the mission of their mother and said that they would work with her to try and keep Mercy Hill from the fate of other state hospitals all over the country which are being closed after being gutted, one after the other.

After an incident with the highest security ward, Mercy Hill is dealing with even more scrutiny than it ever has before. Lisa Cross is pushing each of her daughters harder in the name of her mission. But as the sisters move into adulthood, the pressures of their environment as well as their mother ends up putting them on different and dangerous paths.

The battle keeps going and as it does, the narrator and youngest sister Denise deals with the additional responsibility that comes along with being part of the last hope for the dreams of their mother. This story is set in the late nineties and the early ‘00s. Mercy Hill’s fate is dangling in the balance and Denise is contending with the changes that are shaping and working to destroy her family, set among the backdrop of American mental healthcare.

Full of great insight and authentic humor, Thurman has been able to relay the turmoil that comes along with growing up as well as what having a true calling really means and the bonds of family that exist. Read Mercy Hill by Hannah Thurman and catch a debut work that is really impressive and will pull you in from the very first word. This is the perfect read for reading on your own or sharing with the book club, so check it out and see what you think.
