Helen Perelman
Helen Perelman is an American author who writes stories for children and young adults. She has built a strong career crafting books that feel warm and easy to pick up. Her work includes popular series like Candy Fairies and The Fairy Bell Sisters. Readers often find themselves drawn into her worlds without even realizing it, because the stories do not try too hard to impress.
One of Perelman’s real strengths as a writer is how she builds her main characters. She gives them small worries, little hopes, and everyday problems that feel true to life. A young reader can look at a Perelman protagonist and think, “that could be me.” This connection makes her books entertaining without needing big action scenes or complicated plots. The characters just act like real kids would.
Perelman also has a clear gift for creating stories that keep people reading. She moves her plots along with gentle twists and simple goals that feel important to the characters. There is nothing flashy or overdone in her approach. Instead she lets the narrative breathe while still pushing forward. That balance between cozy and compelling is what makes her work stand out.
She entertains readers around the world by staying true to her own voice. She does not chase trends or try to write what adults think kids should like. Instead she pulls from ideas that genuinely interest her, like candy filled lands or fairy sisters with small daily adventures. That honesty comes through on the page, and young readers from different countries seem to feel it.
Perelman writes stories that feel personal rather than manufactured. She keeps her characters kind but not perfect, and her problems small but meaningful. A reader in Japan or Brazil or France can pick up one of her books and still understand the emotions at play. The settings might be make believe, but the feelings are not. That mix of real heart and playful imagination helps her work travel across borders without losing its shape.
Looking ahead, Helen Perelman shows no sign of slowing down. She continues to write new stories that fit naturally with the ones she has already made. Fans can expect more of the same honest, character driven work in the years ahead. Her best work may still be on its way.
Early and Personal Life
As a young person, Helen Perelman found herself drawn to books the same way many future writers do. She read often and let those early stories plant a small seed in her mind. That seed did not bloom right away, but it never went away either.
She later took jobs that kept her close to children’s literature. Perelman worked inside a kids’ bookstore and also served as an editor for children’s books. Those roles taught her how good stories work from the inside out, not just as a reader but as a professional.
Today she writes full time from her home in New York. She lives there with her husband and two daughters. That family life does not distract from her work so much as feed into it, giving her fresh reminders every day of what young readers actually enjoy.
Writing Career
Helen Perelman began her writing career with novels like Dadnapped in 2009 and Super Sweet 13 in 2010, both released under the name Helen Perelman Bernstein. She then launched her most well known series, Candy Fairies, with Chocolate Dreams in 2010. That series grew quickly to include twenty main books, three special editions, and several omnibus collections through 2018.
Perelman later started another series called Royal Sweets in 2018 with A Royal Rescue. She added seven more books to that series through 2023, including titles like Save the Unicorns and Friends Forever. Her career remains active as she continues to write, and readers can expect more from her in the future.
Cool Mint
The children’s fantasy book “Cool Mint” was written by Helen Perelman with illustrations by Erica Jane Waters. Aladdin published the title on October 19, 2010. This work served as the fourth entry in Perelman’s Candy Fairies series.
The tiniest fairies in Sugar Valley are the Mint Fairy family, and they carry a very large workload when the cold season arrives. The biggest event of winter is the Marshmallow Run sledding race, but this year a Mint Fairy named Dash must build a fresh candy cane seat for Princess Lolli. Dash would rather race down the marshmallow hills, and a sour troll named Mogu dares her to a sledding contest with the peppermint sticks at stake. Readers will wonder whether Dash can beat the troll and still finish the throne on time.
Any young readers who pick up this book will likely find the winter setting charming and easy to enjoy. The story moves along at a nice pace without getting too complicated. A young fan of fairy adventures would probably appreciate the simple stakes and fun sledding theme. This title works well for anyone looking for a light and pleasant read.
Oh, Brother!
The children’s fantasy book “Oh, Brother!” was written solely by Helen Perelman. Disney Press published this title on September 29, 2009. The work stood as the seventh volume in the Wizards of Waverly Place series, which was based directly on the television show of the same name.
A family living in New York City appears ordinary on the outside. Mom and Dad run a small deli in Manhattan, and their children Alex, Justin, and Max deal with regular things like school and friends. But those three kids are actually wizards in training, and only one of them can keep magical powers past the age of eighteen. In this seventh book Alex grows tired of always being compared to Justin, so she uses a genie to make him vanish, only to realize she must find a way to bring him back while their father shares a big magical secret.
Anyone looking for a light magical story would likely enjoy this book’s funny sibling problems. The genie twist adds some fun without being too complicated. Fans of the TV show will probably appreciate the familiar family feel. It is a quick and cheerful pick for anyone who likes magic with a side of humor.
