Holly Goldberg Sloan is an American screenwriter, bestselling novelist, producer, and film director.

Born 1958, if you aren’t familiar with Sloan’s books then you may be familiar with her work in Hollywood. Holly is known for writing the screenplay for Angels in the Outfield as well as producing it, wrote and directed The Big Green and other family feature length films, and has been a part of many other projects.

She was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, but spent her childhood growing up in the state of California as well as Istanbul, the Netherlands, Washington, D.C., and the state of Oregon, where she attended high school and graduated.

She is a mother and is married to Gary Rosen, the writer and illustrator. She has two sons and resides with her husband in Santa Monica, California. Her debut novel to come out was titled I’ll Be There. She would follow that up with the novel Counting By 7s. Just Call My Name followed up to I’ll Be There and is set a few months after the conclusion of the first book.

Counting By 7s was the Amazon best novel of the year in the category of middle grade. It was nominated in 2014 for a Dorothy Canfield Fisher Book Award, was nominated for the Global Read Aloud Award, and was selected as an E.B. White Honor Book. It received the Hans Christian Andersen award in Italy in 2015 for the best novel for children who are ages twelve and up. It has been featured on 44 different U.S. state reading list and has sold over a million copies.

Her parents were psychology professor Lewis and architect Robin. She attended Wellesley College in Massachusetts, where she received her undergraduate degree. She worked for a time in NYC in advertising before moving to Los Angeles. There she had instantaneous success and was just twenty-four years old when she was able to sell her first screenplay.

She has written for the 1993 movie Made in America and was also the first woman to direct a Disney live action film when she wrote and directed The Big Green in 1995. She would also wrote and direct The Secret Life of Girls.

Sloan has also been the screenwriter for Steve Irwin’s The Crocodile Hunter: Collision Course. She wrote and directed Heidi 4 Paws, which retold Heidi and cast live-action dogs in all parts. She also was the screenwriter on One Christmas Eve, a Hallmark Hall of Fame Christmas movie that was released in 2014.

Sloan has also ventured into other areas and came out with Appleblossom the Possum in 2015. It was picked as an Amazon Best Book of the Month and was made an Indie Next selection for fall 2018. It was adapted into audiobook format, narrated by Dustin Hoffman and featuring Ry Cooder’s music. The book was also illustrated by Gary A. Rosen, Sloan’s husband.

Sloan also came out with other novels, such as Short, which was a bestseller on the New York Times and the Indie Bookstore. She also co-authored To Night Owl from Dogfish with Meg Wolitzer, which came out as an Indie Bookstore bestseller and was also optioned by Disney+.

She has also written The Elephant in the Room, and her first novel for adults was titled Pieces of Blue and came out in 2023.

I’ll Be There is the first book in the series by the same name by Holly Goldberg Sloan. The book came out from Little, Brown, and Company and is released in two dozen languages and in print from over thirty publishers. It has also been optioned to become a one hour television series, as has Just Call My Name.

The main character in this story is Emily Bell, and she is someone who believes in the concept of destiny. She thinks that being forced to take on a solo and sing it as part of the church choir even though her voice is fairly average must be meant to be.

She figures that it’s fate when Emily first glimpses Sam. Since the first time that she saw him, she knew that they were connected. Sam Border wants to escape from this place, but the only problem with that is there is nowhere really for him to go.

He has spent his entire life along with his younger brother Riddle moving around. Their father has uprooted them constantly for as long as he can remember. But things are about to change. When he sees Emily for the first time, it really seems like things are about to turn around.

Sam and Riddle come into the Bells’ lives and they find that a family can be warm for the first time. When tragedy hits them, the brothers find that they are left to scrap to survive in the lonely wilderness and they will have to wonder if they will ever have a home in the world and a place where they truly are meant to belong.
