Jeremy Szal is an Australian bestselling science fiction novelist best known for the Common Saga series. The author was born in 1995 and claims that he was brought up by wild dingoes in his homeland. Living in Sydney, he spent much of his childhood exploring bookstores, beaches, and the limits of people’s patience. Szal published Stormblood, the debut novel of the Common Saga series, in 2020 and has never looked back since. He now has at least half a dozen works of fiction to his name that also include novellas and short stories. As it stands, he has published more than fifty short stories in the science fiction genre that have been translated into at least half a dozen languages and have been published in many anthologies.
He was the fiction editor of StarshipSofa, the Hugo Award-winning podcast where he collaborated with Harlan Ellison, William Gibson, and George R.R. Martin. Over the years, he has become known for writing works with heroes in dark worlds looking for hope, morally grey heroes unable to do the right thing despite wanting to, outcasts, families, and aliens. Earlier on, she went to the University of N.S.W. where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Creative Writing and Film studies. He now makes his home in Sydney, Australia, where he loves to make too many dark jokes and watch a bunch of weird films.
Szal first got into reading at the prompting of his mother who was an English teacher that encouraged him to read during the holidays. During that time, he used to go to the library every week and still cherishes the memories of the books he read. Back then he never cared about the genre of the stories he read as long as it sounded interesting. In addition to JRR Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings trilogy, he also loved to read Brandon Sanderson, Michael Grant, Maria Synder, Garth Nix, Stephen King, and Eion Colfer. Given that he loved stories, he started to develop a desire to write them, which he began to do when he was about fourteen years old. Jeremy Szal’s earliest work was a combination of urban science fiction and faux neo-noir. As would be expected of someone of his writing style it was a dark story which he used to write after school and then during the holidays when he used to wake up at 6 to write.
Even though he got discouraged and stopped writing at some point, he picked it up once again while he was in the 12th grade when his class started studying science fiction. He was introduced to books such as A Princes of Mars, Dune, Brave New World, Neuromancer, and Frankenstein. They would also watch masterpieces in film such as The Matrix and Blade Runner which had him intrigued. He loved everything about that class, and even now, he would not mind retaking it. It was what would inspire him to delve deeper into the science fiction world that he began to buy science fiction novels and later came up with his own ideas. When he was done with his studies, he began writing his first novel, which he finished during the holidays, and he was off to the races.
After achieving so much success with his novels and short fiction works, he is now a full-time novelist. Jeremy Szal now spends much of his time inside his small Sydney, Australia apartment with all the doors locked as he flails and rages over the keyboard. When he is not penning his bestseller works, he can be found exploring the city hoping to find the perfect ramen, buried in a book, swimming at the beach, playing video games, drinking eccentric IPAs, cooking something spicy, and hanging out at the cinema.
Jeremy Szal published Stormblood, a work in which he introduces himself as one of the most talented and vibrant voices in science fiction and fantasy in 2020. It tells the story of a soldier who will do anything to protect his family and a criminal who is determined to burn down the world. Vakov Fukasawa is a biosoldier who was once a reaper who is fighting for Harmony, the intergalactic governing body, against a brutal invasion. He has to beat the DNA of an extinct alien race known as stormtech. Luckily, the technology had been injected into him, altering his DNA and making him permanently addicted to aggression and adrenaline. Harmony has made the perfect soldier but in doing so has also opened an insatiable market for drugs for those addicted to their body chemistry. Things get interesting when Vakov’s superiors inform him that his former Reapers are being killed and that his estranged brother may be involved. It has been years since they last spoke, but the more he investigates, the more he realizes that there is a darker secret. To win, he might have to give up everything, including betray his own brother if his own body does not beat him to it.
Jeremy Szal’s novel Blindspace continues from where the debut of the series left off. Once again, the lead is a Reaper named Vakov Fukasawa, who has been injected with the DNA of the Shenoi, one of the most genocidal races ever. In the previous outing, he saved his brother from the House of Suns cult and took out their leader. Enraged, the cult and its most elite members are coming for him and his friends. Meanwhile, the cult is also continuing to further their plans of bringing back the Shenoi, which, if successful, will plunge the galaxy into mindless chaos and violence. They are going on a dangerous quest, but Vakov and his misfit crew, composed of rogue hackers, troubled bounty hunters, and eccentric aliens, wil do anything to ensure the Shenoi do not come back to life. However, what they do not know is that Vakov, who they consider a friend and ally, is also a great risk to the group. He had one glimpse of the horrible Shenoi while he was in interstellar space, and since then, he has been suffering from violent nightmates. These might suggest that the alien DNA is not only inside his body but that he might have already switched sides in his mind.
