Main character Axel Steen works as an investigator in the homicide department in Copenhagen. He continues to be driven by an unrest on the inside. He is constantly worried that his heart could stop beating and the thought of it keeps him awake on a nightly basis. He thinks about this while looking out at the world from the window of his old apartment across the artist and drug and red light district of Copenhagen.

Close by at a cemetery, an unidentified man is discovered dead. His body has been propped up against a gravestone, and the authorities decide that it’s time to call Axel to the scene. The investigation at first leads to the police force and links to the demolition of a nearby youth hostel. However, looks can be deceiving.

Axel is about to discover that there are a lot of people inside the police and outside of it that have an interest in the case and don’t want it to be solved. Axel is caught in a personal crisis but despite this is not going to stop until this case is solved, no matter what the consequences are.
