John Walker is a bestselling science fiction novelist who made his name with the Rise of Mankind series. The elements of science fiction in his novels come from the fact that he went to the University of Reading where he got a solid-state physics Ph.D. Before he became a full-time author he worked for the Reading-based company Racal Communication where he was a technical manager. Walker would then make use of his experience in physics and technology and blend his expertise with innovative storytelling, to come up with some fascinating narratives that resonate with his readership. Walker made his writing debut in 2008, when he collaborated with Dandi Daley Mackall to write the short story Thank You for Thanksgiving. However it was when he published his 2016 novel Behemoth that he would come into his own. The success of Behemoth would give him the confidence that he needed to turn his then part-time gig into a full-time profession. John Walker’s most popular novel Behemoth tells the story of a massive starship named Behemoth. The ship is a project by Earth to have a ship that will defend the planet against aliens who have recently caused much devastation. The planet has been lucky to get the help of allied aliens which was what prevented total disaster when the attacks came last time around. Captain Gray Atwell who has been in charge of the project from the first day will lead the crew aboard the Behemoth as they take on invaders. The Behemoth is a ship that comes with some advanced technologies that include superior shielding and weapons, even if it has never been in battle. They also have the problem of an inexperienced crew who just recently graduated from the academy. Clea An’Tufal who is an ally of planet Earth who has experience with fighting off an alien race is the chief advisor to Captain Atwell. Things get interesting when an unidentified ship is sighted in the night sky, with its intentions and origins unclear. It is time for their first real challenge that will tell whether the Behemoth and crew have what it takes to take on a badass enemy.

Warfare is John Walker’s second novel of the Rise of Mankind series of novels. In the debut, the planet has built a massive ship to protect against aliens. In this novel, Earth once again comes under threat when some aliens who had been fleeing a dangerous enemy lead hostile forces into the solar system. The Behemoth comes to their rescue and saves them and their ship and in the process, they come upon Protocol Seven which has to be one of the most powerful weapons against alien enemies. But transmitting the technology to their allies is easier said than done. Two allied ships come to help Planet Earth, with one heading out alongside Behemoth to Kielan territory where they will be visiting a secret research facility, while the other stays behind to defend the planet. Balancing world-building, intrigue, and action, it is a fluid and engaging narrative that keeps its readers engaged from the first page to the last.

In 2016, John Walker published the third novel of the Rise of Mankind series of novels. For once, this is a military science fiction novel that is all about piracy rather than an alien war. Earth has been working on a sister vessel to Behemoth which is nearly completed. However, they cannot finish the ship since they do not have Ulem, a necessary element that is mined in asteroids and planetoids all over the Alliance space. One station that was tasked with delivering the element had sent a distress call asserting that pirates had overrun the station. The Alliance turns to the military council on Earth requesting the services of Behemoth in taking back the station. In return, the promise to provide Ulem the much-needed element for the construction of Earth’s defensive ships. However, Behemoth is just coming from a brutal engagement at the research facility and is not expected to arrive back on Earth any time soon. It may be that the pirates intend to steal the expensive mineral but with these things, one can never take chances.
