About Joshua Whitehead

Joshua Whitehead is an accomplished Canadian poet and author. His writing is renowned for its ability to craft compelling and entertaining characters and protagonists. Early and Personal Life

Born on January 5th, 1989, Joshua Whitehead has always been passionate about reading and writing. As a member of the Oji-Cree Peguis First Nation in Manitoba, Joshua pursued his interest in literature, first attending the University of Winnipeg and then the University of Calgary for graduate studies.

His debut poetry collection, Full-Metal Indigiqueer, was published by Talonbooks in 2017 and was nominated for a Lambda Literary Award in 2018, though Joshua opted to withdraw it from consideration due to the category of transgender poetry not being an accurate representation of his identity as a two-spirit person.

Throughout his writing career, Joshua has used his own experiences as an indigenous person and two-spirit individual to craft stories that are unique to him and his culture. Despite the challenges of being an indigenous writer, he has been celebrated for his work and continues to create meaningful stories.

Writing Career

Joshua Whitehead was a highly successful Canadian author. His literary career began in 2018 with the publication of his debut novel, Jonny Appleseed. This work was met with widespread appreciation and helped Whitehead land the finalist position for the Dayne Ogilvie Prize, a longlist nomination for the Scotiabank Giller Prize, and a shortlisted finalist position for the Governor General’s Award for English-language fiction and the Amazon.ca First Novel Award. On top of that, Jonny Appleseed was awarded the Lambda Literary Award for Gay Fiction from the 31st Lambda Literary Awards and later chosen as the winner of the 2021 Canada Reads competition.

In 2021, Whitehead released Love After the End: An Anthology of Two-Spirit and Indigiqueer Speculative Fiction, which was edited by Whitehead. This work showcased various different authors and was awarded the Lambda Literary Award for LGBTQ Anthology at the 33rd Lambda Literary Awards. Whitehead’s writing career continues to be successful and grow with no signs of stopping.

Making Love with the Land

On November 15, 2022, the memoir ‘Making Love with the Land: Essays’ was released by the University of Minnesota Press. It was available in both print and digital format, fast becoming a success. This book was published to the world, as it looked at dealing with pain and trauma.

In Making Love with the Land, Whitehead explores the relationship between body, language, and land through creative essay, autobiography, and confession. His evocative and sensual prose delves into the physical and emotional pain of coping with trauma as an Indigenous body. He introduces a new form of storytelling called ‘biostory’, which transcends genre and affirms his sovereignty.

Whitehead re-frames mental health struggles as a relation and provides waypoints for personal transformation. Written during a time of heartbreak and pandemic, this book encourages new ways of connecting with and caring for each other and the land.
