This is the story of two girls as well as the wild year that they have that will cost one of them their life. It will also end up defining the other person’s life for decades to come. There are a lot of things about Cat’s new town in rural Michigan that are good, but there are a lot of things about it that make it very lonely for the fifteen year old and make it appear off-kilter.
Things might end up changing when she meets her neighbor Marlena, who is beautiful and manic and has a habit of popping pills. Cat finds that she is being pulled into her orbit and starts to go through many firsts for herself, such as her first kiss, cigarette, drink, and pill. As she does, Marlena keeps picking the same habits.
Through the course of the year, Marlena will be found dead, drowned in six inches of cold water in the woods close by. Now it has been decades later and a ghost from the year comes back unexpectedly. Once more Cat is going to have to attempt to move on, despite the memory of Marlena calling her back.
This story is told through a dialogue that takes place between the present and past, an incredible story of the friendships that we have that end up shaping us and the many ways that it can be possible to get oneself and pull yourself back from the brink. Famous Men is a 2026 novel by Julie Buntin. If you thought that the novel Marlena was interesting, then you might very much enjoy the second book from this author, a novel that is all about a young woman who is looking for a father out in the world and instead finds herself. The result is a story that explores a variety of themes such as power, art, sex, and money.
The right book picked up at the correct time has the power to change our lives. Main character Will Miles is trapped. He’s a young man who has found himself stuck in Greening, Michigan. A toxic rumor from high school has ended up making her into a social exile.
Will feels that she is trapped in her mother’s predictable routines and has grown even more under the stare of her mother’s boyfriend, who is becoming increasingly sinister. When Will finds the early poems of Nathaniel Fellow, a famous writer who is forty years older than her who grew up in Greening as well, she thinks that she has found a kindred spirit. A comment from her mother only makes Will more fascinated and causes her to wonder whether he could be the father that she never knew.
Will comes up with a plan and carries it out where he looks for Nathaniel, tracking his footsteps to New York City. There she finds out that he will not be the answer to her past in the way that she pictured. Their meeting inspires a complicated relationship that ends up giving Will access to the type of world that she imagined, full of writers, of intellectuals, living with a financial safety net, and even a look into what her own potential looks like.
She also needs to figure out who Nathaniel Fellow is off of the page and to figure out what shaping her life in order to complement his will end up costing her. When information about his past threatens her life with Nathaniel and the story she tells herself about him, she’ll have to deal with a choice that could end up changing everything.
This is a story about children, parents, ambition and more, as well as the ways that women pay for men’s mistakes. Find out how one woman goes to find out where she comes from and what she is made of by reading Famous Men by Julie Buntin.
