The place is Rome, the time is 100 B.C. In a city made of clay and marble, grandeur and grime often go side by side and you can see them both. The strong Tiber River moved through the center of it, the lifeblood of this water as old as the hills of the Palatine. Rome was a city that was about to go through a change, an empire that had not been born but was restless, the place where generals and senators made plans for their legacies, and a location where the masses were engaging in the bread and circuses just to make it through.
In the middle of this turbulent place, a child was born into the Julian family, a group that claims lineage from Venus. He was named Gaius Julius Caesar, a title that would one day come with the weight of greatness, even though this baby just cried like a regular child.
His mother Aurelia would cradle him with a combination of pride as well as determination, her eyes holding the same resolve that would end up shaping the child’s early years. His father carried the same name as this child, a tall and stern praetor of standing but not in the world of holding large power. But he could not have seen into the future to witness the shadow that his son would eventually end up casting over not only Rome but the world.
As the child’s younger years unfolded in the Subura, a district where the dignity of the patricians met the struggle of the plebeian, Julius would learn the art of surviving. The streets were louder than one might think, filled with the crying out of merchants and the sound of cart wheels moving, but they also served as the breeding ground for Julius’s ambition.
The political ties that his father held made sure that he would know how privileged they were to have an education. There were also Greek tutors who taught him in a variety of subjects, instructing him on the epics of Homer, Alexander’s strategies, and Cicero’s eloquence. Despite this, it ended up being Aurelia who would become his truest guide, a woman who showed him the way of discipline as well as how to wield the subtle art of influence.
Rome was no place for the weak to exist. Throughout Julius’s time as a child, men rose and fall in the process of seeking dominion. In those years the tough dictator Sulla was in power, showing that the greatest can even fall to the cruel hand of fate. There were also whispers, speaking of alliances and betrayals, and the blood that poured in the chambers of the Senate. All of it would lead to a fire that was growing inside the boy as well as a desire to go above the chaos and find his own personal path.
Life can often be unpredictable, as Julian found out when he was sixteen years old. At that time, all of his world ended up shifting. His father had always served as a figure of stability, and his sudden death was a shock. The loss of this person in his life would leave a void behind that nothing could really fill, not education or family lineage. It was a reminder of mortality, and young Caesar would have no choice but to witness the reality of the unforgiving stage of Rome and life.
Despite this, there was resolve and as Julius grew to be a man, he saw that his path was not shaped by anyone’s ambition but his own. In the shadow of the modest home of his family, underneath the weight of the expectations of Rome, a legend began to grow. Destiny was in the heart of this young Roman, and the eternal city would never quite be the same. Rise of the Eagle is the second book in the Seeds of Empire series by K.M. Ashman. Grief can lead to ambition, which can lead to power, which can lead to destiny.
As Rome goes further into chaos, Julius sees a moment that he can seize. Using powerful oratory, he captivates the masses. He then uses political maneuvering to ascend the Cursus Honorum of Rome, which is the political ladder to power. When conspiracy comes along and risks the Republic being devoured, he stands on his own, defiant, showing the principled soul that exists beneath the exterior which was always so calculated.
In Hispania, which is soaked with blood, he trades in political games for the clarity of battle. His military genius wakes up among the Lusitanian tribes and the victories that he enjoys push him further towards a secret pact with two of the most powerful men in Rome, forming a triumvirate that appears destined to shake up the solid foundations of the Republic.
As Caesar becomes more powerful, the whispers of his foes grow. Scandal overcomes his success and many are envious. He moves towards the highest office of Rome, the Consulship, and along the way is going to have to decide how much honor he will sacrifice in his quest for power.
