Two teenagers who are star crossed for each other fall in love during the time of the Hong Kong protests. Phoenix is a young woman of sixteen years old and has a huge opportunity in front of her. She also knows that her parents have invested so much financially so that she could leave Hong Kong and attend school in America, receiving an Ivy League education.

Her parents believe that getting to America means pursuing big dreams, having a big bank account, getting big status. But Phoenix just wants a place that she can call home. She doesn’t really know where that would be, but when protests in Hong Kong start to begin, she starts to see that the place that she didn’t know she cared about so much might just disappear.

Then there’s Kai, who is seventeen years old. He doesn’t see himself as a cop or a filial son and has more of an identity as an artist. When his mother passes away, he must leave the city of Shanghai behind to see his father and reunite with the estranged parent.

His father is a police officer and has taken the liberty of enrolling his son in the police academy in Hong Kong. Kai doesn’t want to enjoy the job, but doesn’t mind it and finds that he wants to win the approval of his father. Then he switches phones with Phoenix, and in the process accidentally finds out that she is involved in a protest network.

Kai infiltrates the group and then reports on what they are planning on doing to the police, all in a bid to try and get his father to be proud of him. Phoenix and Kai together seem to be working for the same thing, to try and fight for Hong Kong’s future. In the process, they find a spark of attraction lighting between the two of them.

They have a close relationship, but it’s also one that’s constructed on deception. Do they have the capacity to care for the person that is left behind when everything comes to light? Or will the teens discover that anything precious that they have has just been blown to smithereens by the lies, never to come back again and resulting only in broken hearts?
