The Secrets of Hartwood Hall is the debut novel from author Katie Lumsden. If you have been looking for a book that is both atmospheric and also pulls you in, check out this gripping story that is not only a gothic mystery that will give you chills up and down your spine but also is an homage of sorts and a love letter to Victorian fiction.
People rarely go to Hartwood Hall as they say that it’s cursed. But is it really? The year is 1852. Margaret Lennox is a young widow who is doing her best to try and get away from all of the shadows of her past. She plans on doing so by taking a job working as a governess for the only child Louis at a house in the country in the west of England.
Margaret is doing well with the job, but she quickly also starts feeling that something on the property is not right. There are strange figures that can be glimpsed in the dark, there is tension among the servants, and there is an abandoned east wing.
Stranger than all of this is the gossip that is going around town about Mrs. Eversham, Louis’s widowed mother. The village doesn’t trust her much and the gossip reflects that. Margaret is lonely at the property and she isn’t sure who to trust, so she ends up in a forbidden relationship with Paul, the gardener.
As Margaret’s history runs the risk of catching up with her, it isn’t too much longer before she starts to find the truth that exists behind all of the secrets that Hartwood Hall possesses. Will she be able to handle this sudden influx of information? Read this book to find out!
The Trouble with Mrs. Montgomery Hurst is the second book to come out from author Katie Lumsden. If you have been wanting something original to read and love a book set further back in the past, give this novel a try!
The year is 1841. Mr. Montgomery Hurst of Radcliffe Park is about to tie the knot. But the county of Wickenshire is a little peeved because he is not getting married to some high ranking woman like the daughter of an earl but instead a widow who has not very much money. She does have, however, three children and the distinction of being someone that no one has ever heard of. It’s safe to say that the society members are appalled just as much as they are intrigued.
Everyone is very curious about this marriage to be, but no one is more curious than Mr. Ashpoint. He is a local brewer with plenty of wealth who has hoping that Mr. Hurst might end up selecting his daughter Amelia to be his bride.
The only issue with this is the fact that Amelia would not be interested in marrying this man, as she proclaims to be not very interested in marrying anyone at all. The marriage of Mr. Hurst starts off a variety of events, and it starts to become apparent that while his business is his own that everyone else is interested in it too. Will he be able to find happiness and get married, or will the interference of others play an unwelcome part in it all? Read this book to find out!
