Katy Brent is a published author and journalist. Hailing from the United Kingdom, she has won awards for her work.
Katy has worked on various websites, magazines and newspapers since 2005. She has also written about popular culture, as with her book, How to Kill Men and Get Away With It, which was her first fictional novel.
The author says that book first began as an embryonic idea, something of Sex and the City meets ‘stabby’. Then the author took a Faber Academy writing course in 2018. She was interested in Jodie Comer in Killing Eve and along those lines wanted to write a really strong female character. She wanted to write a woman who was kind of like Buffy Summers, but instead of taking out vampires, she would be taking out the horrible men of the world that were hurting her friends.
The idea started to come to life more and more, and it started to make sense to Katy to see the main character of Kitty as targeting men who were monsters, not simply players. At the time the #MeToo movement was in full swing. For readers to sympathize with the character, she needed an MO.
Katy was also a fan of American Psycho and started to think about what the story and movie would look like if penned today. That story was set in the eighties in New York, so Brent started to think about what that story would look like now, getting inspired by influencer culture. There were just pictures back then, no reels or stories, but what if one of the influencers had a horrible secret?
From there, the story continued to take shape. The author was watching Made In Chelsea and thought it would be great to have a story set in that world of the overly privileged. Katy wanted to make Kitty an heiress, but also something that was less glamorous. Meat production and distribution it is, making the character a vegan serial killer in the process.
Katy completed the novel, which was originally titled How to Kill Men and Influence People. This was done during 2020 and she started talking with agents in 2021, which did not go so well. She got rejected quite a bit, although she did get some good feedback. Katy tried not to take it to heart despite the constant rejections but started looking for publishers with imprints that took submissions from authors without agents. She sent her initial manuscript out to a few different places and then kept going with her life.
She enrolled at the University of Winchester to pursue a Creative Writing MA and thought she would come back to her manuscript later with some fresh eyes. Katy was very surprised when she received an email from the HarperCollins imprint HQ Digital. They offered her a deal for two books, which was very exciting. She received three direct offers but decided to accept HQ’s offer. She signed with them the same day that she started her MA. The book came out as an e-book and in audio format, followed quickly by the paperback format.
It has been the dream of this author since she was a young girl to become a published writer and she says that she is very happy that she didn’t give up on her dream.
How to Kill Men and Get Away With It is the first novel to come out from Katy Brent. If you are looking for a great book that is a fun and easy read, then you’re going to want to check this book out!
Kitty Collins is the main character in this story, and she sure is a character. You may know her as a friend, as a lover, and also as a … killer?
There was a guy that was coming after Kitty that she recognized. This was the guy from the nightclub, who just would not leave her alone while she was there. She didn’t want to kill him, but when it happened, it wasn’t like she was going to beat herself up about it.
Even though she made a tremendous mess, Kitty thinks that she’s actually gotten away with it. This is what first sparked the taste within her for blood, and it isn’t long before she’s addicted to that sweet taste of killing, that taste for revenge. She wants more of it now that she’s tasted it, and she won’t stop until her appetite is sated.
This is a dark story that is all about everything from murder to love and friendship! Twisted and with plenty of turns, you will enjoy this book if you love Killing Eve, Suicide Squad, Dexter, or any self-aware dark comedy.
The Murder After the Night Before is the second novel from Katy Brent. If you have been searching for something new to read that is also light and fun, give this book a try!
Main character Molly Monroe knows that something is off. She’s woken up with the worst hangover in the entire world at home with a stranger in her bed. Molly thinks that she was murdered– in fact, she knows it.

She’s got to put all of this aside so that she can track down a killer and do whatever it takes to get out there and find the person who killed her friend.
The only trouble is that she cannot remember hardly anything. Can Molly put her mind to the task and find the psycho who killed her friend? Or is she about to find that the only thing more difficult than solving the hangover from the night before is trying to remember what actually happened? Read this caper from Katy Brent to find out!
