Main character Rob Finn goes by the name of Longshot, so named for his skill with a precision rifle. He is a man that has unusual qualities. He has an ability to succeed in different missions of spying and assassination.

He is a man that has a deep sense of personal resolve, as well as duty. He also possesses a physical strength that surpasses many other men. Then a tragedy strikes close to home, and Rob must go within himself in order to find the emotional strength that he needs to go on.

His special orders come through his spymaster Allan Pinkerton from Abraham Lincoln. Rob has a problem as he starts to become aware of all of the duplicity in government. He is a man of duty, so he has to follow orders. But he also has honor and a conscience, and must use his own best judgment to figure out what is the truth and what paths he should ultimately follow.

Rob interacts with real figures from history, and events that actually happened are mixed in with the daily lives and the conversations of people who were living in those times that were so dangerous and quickly changing. Follow along with Rob as he does his best to save the things that he believes are really important while doing his best to sort the true from the false beliefs in the confusing environment that was the U.S. Civil War in the year 1862.

Rob is under a lot of pressure when it comes to making sure that he secures the war funding for the Union, as it is vital to the cause. So it becomes the case that he travels the trail West with a companion by his side, the one and only Buffalo Bill, then still a young man.

Moving through terrain that is unfamiliar to him that is full of predators, he and his band find out that the wild frontier is a place that doesn’t necessarily feel that it has to follow the rules. With spies and liars that are working for the different sides of the war, soon Rob’s steadfast belief in his government starts to flicker. Will he be able to follow his own personal principles, keep the gold safe, and manage to keep his name off of being engraved onto a tombstone at the same time?
