The Good Afghan is the debut book from Kevin Maurer. When a Special Forces soldier puts everything on the line, it’s in the hopes that he can achieve just one victory in the forever war of America against Afghanistan.
Charlie is a Special Forces soldier with the American troops. When he discovers that the Taliban is attempting to try and sell a Soviet suitcase nuke to Al-Qaeda, he decides that it is time to enlist his old interpreter who is now a contractor named Ahmed Wali to try and get it recovered.
Wali is one of the so-called ‘good’ Afghans, but it turns out that this man has his own problems. His first problem is with Jan, the local warlord. He’s a man who is doing everything that he can to try and drive Wali out of business. The second problem is with Razaq, his uncle, who has ties to the Taliban that are putting his ability to collaborate with the Americans in jeopardy.
Charlie and Wali work with the assistance of Felix, the pragmatic CIA officer who is also morally fluid, to try and do everything that they can to get this dangerous suitcase nuke off of the battlefield. At the same time, Air Force Tech Sgt. Canterbury begins an investigation into Wali’s business.
Sgt. Canterbury is convinced despite the man’s reputation that Wali is not a ‘good Afghan’ but instead one of the bad guys. He ends up arresting him for the crime of working with the Taliban. But what should be a simple act ends up sending the whole operation akimbo and it ends up forcing Charlie and Felix to have to work in areas that are morally gray so that they can secure their objectives.
Interesting and relevant, The Good Afghan by Kevin Maurer takes a closer look at politics, the concept of identity, the Afghan war, and a nation building experiment gone awry. Check out this book if you have been searching for something new and engaging to read and see why so many are adding it to their bookshelves and lists of ‘to read’ for themselves!
