Krysten Ritter is an American published author, musician, former model, and actress.

Born on December 16, 1981, readers and fans may know her for a variety of roles. She has been Jessica Jones in the Netflix Marvel series by the same name, the star of the short-lived but cult classic television show ‘Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23’, and had a role on AMC’s hit show Breaking Bad.

For film, she has been featured in movies such as Big Eyes, Life Happens, Listen Up Philip, She’s Out of My League, and Confessions of a Shopaholic. She is also the founder of Silent Machine, her production company which aims to highlight complex female protagonists. She has a dog Mikey as well.

Her first experience in entertainment was in modeling before appearing on Veronica Mars and then Gilmore Girls. Her role as Jane Margolis on Breaking Bad would be her breakthrough, before headlining ‘Apartment 23’ and then moving on to star as Jessica Jones, appearing as the character on the show by the same name as well as The Defenders. The role will also be featured in Daredevil: Born Again’s second season. She also made an appearance in Love & Death, a Max miniseries.

Ritter has also been in movies such as 27 Dresses, What Happens in Vegas, and Life Happens, which she wrote, co-produced, and starred in. She was also a vampire in the horror comedy movie Vamps and has been in The Hero as well as Nightbooks, a dark fantasy. In addition to this, she is also a singer and guitarist for Ex Vivian, her indie rock band.

Krysten was born in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania. She was scouted at a shopping mall by a modeling agent when she was just fifteen years old at a modeling event. In high school, she would travel to model, and signed with Elite Model Management and Wilhelmina Models. She would then move to New York and start her modeling career, appearing on television and in print ads in addition to doing work in cities such as Paris, Milan, Tokyo, and NYC.

The author then transitioned into acting thanks to landing a Wendy’s commercial audition. She would get small parts in films and got a small part in the film Mona Lisa Smile. She would appear in various plays and landed roles on television, appearing in Veronica Mars, Gilmore Girls, ‘Til Death, and the backdoor pilot of “Valley Girls”(a “Gossip Girl” spin off series which was ultimately not picked up).

Krysten also sold a television pilot called Model Camp in 2009 that was based on her own modeling experiences, and made an appearance in Woke Up Dead, a comedic web series. She would appear in the t.v. series Gravity and was in Killing Bono, based off a book by the same name. Ritter also appeared in El Camino: A Breaking Bad movie, and was cast as the lead in Orphan Black: Echoes, which was canceled after airing one season in 2024. She also appeared in Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

Ritter has appeared in other series and continues to enjoy a strong screen presence and career. She was cast in Dexter: Resurrection, the Dexter sequel series, as a recurring serial killer. She also broke into the literary world with the release of her debut novel Bonfire in 2017, a psychological thriller. Ritter released her second novel in 2025, Retreat, which she co-wrote with Lindsay Jamieson.

The author resides in Los Angeles, having moved there from Brooklyn in 2007. She is a promoter of animal rights, loves to knit, and has a son with her partner Adam Granduciel, who is a musician.
