Kyril Bonfiglioli was an author, editor, and art dealer.
Born on May 29, 1928, he is known for writing the Charlie Mortdecai series. This series started out with the publication of the debut novel, Don’t Point That Thing At Me. Two more books would come out in the series under her name and one of them came out posthumously and was completed by satirist Craig Brown.
The character of Charlie Mortdecai is a fictional art deal and a sort of anti-hero of this series. His character has been referred to as resembling an ‘amoral Bertie Wooster with occasional psychopathic tendencies’. The books remain in print and over the years have been translated into a variety of different languages, such as French, Spanish, Italian, German, and Japanese.
His style and the structure of his novels have often been compared to that of P.G. Wodehouse. Mortdecai as well as Jock Strapp, his manservant, all show a fun house mirror relation to Wodehouse’s Wooster and Jeeves. Even the author was aware of this comparison and in the novels had Mortdecai specifically reference Wodehouse.
Kyril Bonfiglioli ultimately passed away on March 3, 1985.
