Laura Dickerman

Laura Dickerman writes contemporary romance, and she has a real knack for making her characters feel like someone you might actually know. Her people are not perfect, and they do not act like dolls in a diorama. They stumble, they think twice, they say the wrong thing sometimes. That is why readers tend to trust her quickly.

When it comes to building a story, Dickerman knows how to keep things moving without rushing. She gives the plot enough room to breathe, but she also knows when to add a little tension or a funny line. Her books do not drag, and they do not spin their wheels. A reader can settle in and feel carried along without working too hard to stay interested.

The main characters in her work drive the romance through their own choices, not just fate or convenient timing. Dickerman also has a light touch with emotion. She does not drown a scene in sugar or drama. Instead, she keeps the tone warm and grounded, which makes the love stories feel both satisfying and easy to enjoy.

Dickerman’s characters tend to stick with readers long after the last page. They are not written as heroes or heroines in a fairy tale. Instead, they come across as regular people who face problems that feel familiar. That sameness helps a reader care about what happens next.

Even with that down to earth feel, her books offer a clean path out of daily stress. A person can pick up one of her stories and leave behind a long to do list or a noisy house. The world inside the pages runs on its own clock. It feels real enough to believe but far enough away to offer a break.

This mix keeps her work from feeling too heavy or too silly. The characters carry real worries, yet the story never bogs down in gloom. A reader gets the best of both things. They find people they can relate to, and they also get a little room to breathe.

She has built a readership that stretches across different countries. People from many places pick up her books and find something to enjoy. Her stories do not rely on trends or what is popular at the moment. Instead, she writes in a way that feels honest to her own sense of humor, pacing, and emotional range.

That honesty turns out to be a strength on a global scale. A reader in one city might share very little with a reader in another, yet both can laugh at the same awkward date scene or feel relief when a character finally speaks up. Dickerman does not twist her work to please everyone. She trusts her own instincts, and that trust makes the stories feel steady and real.

Because she stays true to herself, her books also stay timeless. They are not chasing a fad or trying to copy a bestseller. Her voice comes through clearly on every page. Readers around the world keep coming back not because the books are loud or flashy, but because they are genuinely entertaining and clearly hers.

Laura Dickerman shows no sign of slowing down. She continues to write new stories. Readers can expect more relatable characters and engaging plots ahead. Her best work may still be on its way.

Early and Personal Life

Laura Dickerman grew up with a clear pull toward books and language. She went on to earn two master’s degrees in the field, one in fiction from New York University and another in English from Middlebury College’s Bread Loaf School of English. Those years of study helped shape her early understanding of story structure and character work.

Her path as a writer took shape alongside a career in teaching. She spent time as a high school English teacher at three different schools: the Hopkins School, the Collegiate School, and Germantown Friends. She also worked as a book club leader, a tutor, and received a grant from the NEH, all while finding small ways to keep writing.

Inspiration came from unexpected places, including a very short temp job for her youngest brother, who was not impressed with her photocopying skills. She also spent time as an intern at The Paris Review, long ago. Today she lives in Atlanta with her husband, and their two daughters are grown, which leaves her more room to focus on the next story.

Writing Career

Laura Dickerman published her first contemporary romance novel, “Hot Desk,” in 2025. The book marked her official entry into the romance genre after years of teaching and studying fiction. It came out to readers who had been waiting to see what she would create.

She continues to write, with more stories planned for the future. “Hot Desk” represented only the beginning of her work as a romance author. Her writing career remains strong, and she shows no intention of stopping.

Hot Desk

Laura Dickerman wrote the contemporary romance novel “Hot Desk.” Gallery Books published the title on September 2, 2025.

In a post pandemic publishing office, two editors named Rebecca Blume and Ben Heath must share a single hot desk on separate days. Neither has ever laid eyes on the other, so they start leaving short, snarky Post it notes near a shared cactus. When a famous literary figure called the Lion dies, both rush to land the big opportunity tied to his estate. The fight pushes each of them to think about their career, the Lion’s legacy, and what the other person really means to them.

As the battle grows more intense, Rebecca uncovers a link between her mother, Jane, and the Lion. The story then moves back forty years to when Jane first arrives in Manhattan and meets her best friend, Rose. Both women are young and talented, eager to leave a mark on the publishing world during a high point for art and writing. Then one day during a heavy April blizzard in 1982, something happens that changes Jane’s life and her friendship with Rose forever.

Readers who pick up this book will likely enjoy the back and forth between the two editors. The shared desk and the notes left behind add a fun spark. The jump to the past brings an extra layer of heart. It is an easy story to recommend to someone looking for a good time.
