Laura Dickerman grew up with a clear pull toward books and language. She went on to earn two master’s degrees in the field, one in fiction from New York University and another in English from Middlebury College’s Bread Loaf School of English. Her path as a writer took shape alongside a career in teaching. She spent time as a high school English teacher at three different schools: the Hopkins School, the Collegiate School, and Germantown Friends. She also worked as a book club leader, a tutor, and received a grant from the NEH, all while finding small ways to keep writing.

Inspiration came from unexpected places, including a very short temp job for her youngest brother, who was not impressed with her photocopying skills. She also spent time as an intern at The Paris Review, long ago. Today she lives in Atlanta with her husband, and their two daughters are grown, which leaves her more room to focus on the next story.

Writing Career
