ABOUT LELAND P. GAMSON
Growing up three miles outside of Washington, D.C., Leland had a Huck Finn childhood with access to the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, community land preserves, the Cabin John State Park and the Potomac River. He also was a bus ride away from the wonders of the nation’s capital. He made frequent use of the library making friends with Homer Price, Winnie-the-Pooh, and Snuffy the Tugboat. He was an Eagle Scout and started writing poetry at an early age.
Leland attended Hiram College, majoring in religion where he was the editor of ‘As Is’ literary magazine. He continued to edit ‘As Is’, as an independent magazine, for several years after graduating. He also has a M.Ed. degree from The American University and a MSW from The Catholic University. While attending the latter, he resided in a Sulpician Seminary.
After receiving his MSW, Leland worked as a therapist and caseworker with the VA. He enjoyed the challenges of working in substance abuse, acute psychiatric admissions, day care, as homeless vet coordinator, and as coordinator of residential care and the student intern program. He is a LCSW, BCD, and a LFMT. After receiving a direct commission with the USAR he was assigned to a combat stress unit for thirteen years, and then a general hospital unit. He retired as a light colonel. He later served as a battalion commander with the Indiana Guard Reserves.
WRITING HISTORY
Leland wrote for the Wesleyan Church’s Sunday School curriculum for several years when their headquarters was in Marion, IN. He started writing children’s books after he retired in 2013. They fall into three categories: wholesome fun rhyming books, overtly Christian books, and children’s activity books. They are ‘kid tested’ by his school readings. LOKAEL: THE DONKEY WHO CARRIED JESUS was an Amazon Best Seller. WHY DO DOGS BARK? and TAMIM:THE PASSOVER LAMB were book of the month winners and THE PONY WHO WANTED TO BE A UNICORN received an award from Story Monsters.
He has written devotionals for the UPPER ROOM, book reviews for ‘Proceeding of Science and Christian Faith’ and is a member of the Academy of American Poets.
(Thanks so much to Leland for writing the bio – much appreciated!)
