Leonie Swann published her debut novel Three Bags Full as a surprising and funny mystery that features some of the most interesting detectives. At the opening of the story, something is very wrong with George the shepherd from the Irish village of Glennkill. His sheep have come around him as they are concerned about the man who cared for them and read to them every night. He is now lying on the ground pinned down by a spade and his flock led by Miss Maple the leader will do anything to find his killer. Among the investigators is Mopple the Whale known for his never-ending hunger and excellent memory, Othello from the Dublin Zoo, and an existential ewe named Zora. Together, they look into the crime late into the night as they make wild speculations. Determined to get to the bottom of the mystery, they go on exploratory missions and soon encounter some possible suspects. There is a sinister priest named Father Will, a secretive village newcomer named Rebecca, and a terrifying butcher named Ham. With heart and wit, it is a savory mystery with a very good plot and characterization.
Swann published her second novel in the series Garou in 2009. This time around, the sheep of Glennkill are about to go on an electrifying wool-raising adventure. Working with Rebecca the shepherdess, they left their home in Glennkill Ireland, and headed to continental Europe. They move into winter quarters in France, a stone throw’s away from a remote castle. It could have been very comfortable except for the neighboring pasture that is full of goats. There is also a general unease about the snow and a mysterious warning about a strange sheep. Could it be A werewolf, a human in sheep’s clothing? A Loup Garou! Or maybe it is all in their minds. When someone stumbles upon a dead body near the forest they don’t know who to fear more between the Garou and his hunters. But what they are certain about is that they will need to get to the bottom of the mystery to protect their own lives and that of their shepherdess. It is not long before their investigations lead them on a trail through the forest and snow flurries and through the castle’s corridors.
