The Body Scout is the first novel to come out from Lincoln Michel. If you are a big fan of stories that fall into the science fiction, cyberpunk, dystopia vein of things, then you are going to want to check out this book.
The main character in this book is Kobo, but he’s having some problems that he’s dealing with at the moment. Things just are not going well at the moment. He knows that his cybernetics are out of date– by an entire decade. He is aware that he has twin sister loan sharks that are continually showing up to knock on his door and they will not be stopping anytime soon.
He also is putting in the work scouting for a baseball league that happens to be run by pharmaceutical companies, but that is quickly about to disappear into nothing. Kobo feels run down by his circumstances, and he starts thinking that things could not get worse than they are at the moment. Of course, that is always the time to knock on wood because usually that is when things get worse.
Kobo finds that things become even more difficult when his best friend from childhood ends up getting killed while on the field. J.J. Zunz is a slugger for the Monsanto Mets, and he’s killed at home plate. The only thing is that they have no idea who did it.
The one thing that Kobo does know is that he is going to try and get out there and find the killer. This mission takes him into places that he would not ordinarily go, moving into various dark corners, different condos, and more in a world that has experienced pandemics over and over and climate change and more.
This is a place where genetic editing as well as advanced drugs are able to let people attain any type of body that they desire. All provided that they have the funds available to do so, of course. However, even though Kobo is in a world with genetically modified CEOs, zoo-tech weapons, philosophical Neanderthals and more, he’s seeing a curve ball coming that he could have never anticipated before.
Will he be able to do what he set out to do and find a killer? Or is that far too much to ask in this complicated future? Read The Body Scout to find out!
