Piglet is the first novel from author Lottie Hazell. If you have been looking for a sharp new voice that is completely original, you may want to check out this debut! This is the story about the appetites and ambitions that women carry with them and what it means to truly have it all.
The main character in this story is a woman named Piglet. That’s not her actual legal name of course, but rather something that she acquired during childhood. She has not been able to shake the nickname yet but despite being burdened with this rather unfortunate moniker she has been pretty happy with the way that her life has shaped up.
Piglet has a great job where she works as a cookbook editor at a publishing house in London, and her career is doing very well. On top of that, she has great friendships with pals that are not only lovely but loyal too. Her romantic life is also thriving, as she is engaged to a handsome man named Kit.
She also likes Kit’s rarefied family, even though they belong to the upper class and have their own associated peculiarities attached to them as a result. She feels very loved by her handsome fiancé, and the feeling is almost certainly mutual. There are so many things that Kit finds to love about his future wife, but one of the top ones has got to be all of the elaborate and delicious meals that she is constantly cooking up for him.
Everything seems to be going swimmingly in life for the couple, and their marriage date is coming up. The last thing that Piglet ever saw coming was the man she loved coming forward with a confession about he had horribly betrayed her. This is terrible news and it’s coming at her just two weeks before the two are set to tie the knot. The timing could not be worse, but it at least may be better than finding out after the pair have already said “I do”.
The news is totally unsettling and Piglet finds that after she receives the information that she is very hungry. The two of them talk and they decide that they will go ahead with the wedding that they have planned. However, as the union draws closer, Piglet finds herself having to manage the random expectations of her family, trying to deal with facing down the work pressure, and her mission to try and come up with the perfect cake for their nuptials.
It is a lot to contend with, and Piglet tries to focus on preparing for the wedding even as she notices herself growing unsettled even more. It’s affecting her behavior and she is acting in ways that she does not really understand.
She’s always wanted this life, but never saw the betrayal coming. She’s also finding that she has a ravenous hunger that may or may not be tied to wanting something that you know that you deserve. By the time that her wedding day draws near, Piglet is nearly completely undone. She also may finally be ready to face up to the truth and start rising above all of the lies that she has been telling herself to try and get by.
This is a completely unique novel that compares the things that we think that we want along with the things that that we actually want, as well as women’s relationship to food, stress, themselves, and more. An original debut read from Lottie Hazell that will have readers turning the page until they get to the end as they follow along with Piglet’s journey and see where she ends up.
